OI DIPNOI (SICILY) @ Django (After Gypsy Art Club)
Jan 17 all-day

oi dipnoi8pm doors, 9pm show

Oi Dipnoi are returning to Django Bar in January, fresh from Woodford Folk Festival!

Hailing from Sicily, this charming trio draws deeply from the wells of tradition while creating a new sound full of personality.  Born from an encounter between tradition and innovation, Oi Dipnoi’s music is rooted in traditional melodies of the region, where new themes are developed and sustained by the diatonic accordion, supported by the Nakaira rhythmic section, with percussion and bass.

Master dancer Francesca Campione will be accompanying the band on this their first sojourn to Australia, enthralling you with Tarantella (traditional southern Italian folk dances).

The “dipnoi” is a metaphor for  the current music scene in Sicily:  prehistoric fish/living fossils that have adapted for survival.  Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see this sensational Sicilian ensemble.

Renee-luke_preview 1a

6pm doors, 8pm show

Having toured Australia for over four years as a soloist with The Ten Sopranos and having sung in prestigious venues all over Australia, Renee has developed both her vocals and her performance skills to become a consummate professional.

Renee has recently recaptured her country roots as a soloist; combining stunning vocals with heart felt songs.

Renee’s recent Christmas release ‘My Man in Red’ was a smash hit getting over 62,000 views on Facebook and being played on CMC; and she is ready to follow that up with a fresh country tune for the start of 2018; ‘Don’t Say it if you don’t mean it’.

‘Nobody puts music & comedy together like Luke Escombe. Taking the madness of the modern world & setting it to a soundtrack of impossibly catchy tunes that leap from funk to soul to afrobeat, punk, hip-hop, blues, mariachi, spoken word & rock and roll – “Confidence” is like Tom Waits, Frank Zappa & Flight of the Conchords got together, had a wild jam session & made a concept album.

Be warned: you’ll be singing these songs to yourself for days “Luke Escombe is a rock-soul singer, raconteur, blistering blues guitarist, comedian & songwriter, & is very good at them all… such sophistication wrapped in a coating of such overt fun. Hear him” (John Shand, SMH)

“I absolutely LOVED the show – brilliantly witty, clever, adventurous, brutally honest, often hilarious….so many irresistible grooves” (Yaron Hallis, owner of Camelot Lounge)

“Burn the name Luke Escombe in your brain. World class musician, world class comedian. Brilliant” (Talkfringe, Adelaide).

club hoy carus 1a7pm doors, 8pm show

Don’t miss this very special double bill from two wonderful acoustic acts:

CLUB HOY (trio)

At the peak of 1990s grunge two girls with guitars blithely flew in the face of fashion and began performing around Sydney’s inner-city pubs as Club Hoy. Their twin vocal sound and sweet melodic folk pop songs soon cut a fresh swathe through the fuzz guitar of the indie music scene.

In 1993, Penny Flanagan and Julia Richardson decided to go their separate ways and pursue individual music careers.

20 years on, the girls have come together again with the purest objective: to play old songs and enjoy each others company. No record business, no pressure, just the joy of music and shared memories. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see them perform in trio mode.

CARUS THOMPSON

Globe trotting troubadour Carus Thompson has done it the hard way. Independent, with no commercial radio play, self-managed and funded he’s toured the world alongside The John Butler Trio, The Waifs, Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson & Pete Murray, selling over 30,000 albums along the way.

He’s won his loyal fan base through 20 years of hitting the road, one punter, one gig, one tour at a time, always delivering passionate, energetic, folk-rocking shows that entertain and engage.

This is the third and final tour for his lauded ISLAND album, before he takes a break to start writing for album number seven. Don’t miss one of this countries finest pub-rock acoustic singer-songwriters.

“Something of a renaissance woman… Somehow she achieves the almost impossible in blending patterned western-ed pop writing with the earthy mystique of African rhythms and freaky world instruments.” – Sydney City News

This Sydney based singer songwriter is known not only for her unmistakable voice and songwriting, but for playing the 21 string West African harp, known as the kora. Miriam draws her influences from far and wide – having most notably spent long periods of time studying traditional music in West Africa.

Her songs seamlessly blend African influences with folk infused melodies. In essence, they are a collection of stories, beautifully told through strings, powerful lyrics and her emotive voice. Playing kora as well as acoustic guitar, Miriam is joined by exceptional string players – violinist Lara Goodridge (FourPlay/ Baby et Lulu) and cellist Kate Adams. Adding their sublime strings and lush vocal harmonies, there is a chemistry between these musicians and their instruments that melds into a soaring beautiful soundscape.

After a run of sold out shows, THE WORLD OF GERSHWIN performed by Australia’s renowned virtuoso SIMON TEDESCHI is coming back to Camelot!

Tedeschi captures the Gershwin repertoire perfectly; with passionate, vivacious performances that are bursting with life and romance. Harmonica legend Larry Adler (who performed with Gershwin himself) said of him: ‘I just wish Gershwin were here – [Simon is] the best exponent of his music I have ever seen.’ The concert will feature classic Gershwin compositions such as Summertime, 3 preludes, I got rhythm, as well as a beautiful solo piano version of Rhapsody in Blue, alongside some less familiar but certain-to-become-favourite numbers revealing Gershwin’s extraordinary versatility and creativity, and his unfailing ability to delight. And…as a very special treat, Simon will also perform a couple of pieces from his new album!!

“A warmness, and at times an irresistible groove, instils it with a playful energy…Tedeschi inhabits each sound world perfectly, and shades the transitions flawlessly and with great sensitivity.” (Limelight Magazine, 2014)

“Tedeschi is eminently suited to mine the rich variety that is the Gershwin heritage…Tedeschi can dive and dive deeply he does, with a pulsating delivery” (The NewYorkCity Jazz Record 2014).

“It’s in the solo works that Tedeschi’s art is best savoured, and nowhere more so than in the solo version of Rhapsody in Blue. Here, Tedeschi…really soars” (Limelight Magazine, 2014)

DRAGON + TAYLOR BEADLE-WILLIAMS
May 4 all-day

DRAGON 24A

7pm doors, 9pm show

Dragon are back, fronted by the legendary kiwi singer Mark Williams. This version of Dragon rocks its way through a long list of iconic songs that are part of the national estate.

Bass player, Todd Hunter has reformed the band after a much needed break of 10 years. Todd and Mark are joined by Canadian guitar slinger, Bruce Reid and drum wizard Pete Drummond.

The band is known for anthems like April Sun In Cuba, Are You Old Enough, Rain, Speak No Evil, Young Years, This Time, Sunshine, Celebrate and Dreams of Ordinary Men. Todd and Marc Hunter started the band in 1973 and Dragon sold over 2 million records over 30 years.

The current live show evolves from an intimate acoustic beginning to a spirited, electric, crowd rousing finale. Mark Williams sings each song in a way that is familiar to the audience but completely his own and strong playing and sublime vocal harmonies have the crowd singing along as if everyone on the room is in the band. Dragon manages to reframe 30 years of Australian musical history into one coherent picture and do justice to a great collection of timeless songs.

CHASING THE MOON @ Django

Chasing-the-Moon-2a

7pm doors, 8pm show

“like walking through a music festival in an Eastern European village” Simon Marnie, ABC Radio

Chasing the Moon brings alive the exuberant and romantic sounds of Gypsy Jazz in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.

There is a fresh flavour to the way different styles are combined, – a mouth-watering mix of hot club and the blues, a dash of folk, lashings of swing, flirting with Latin rhythms and modern elements too. The joy is infectious. The 6 piece ensemble envelopes you in an almost orchestral sound combining vocals, violin, guitar, double bass, sax, piano accordion and drums. The darkly chromatic gypsy sound is counterpointed with the light hearted flair of American swing and the ambience of the Parisian café is there in the accordion of Garry Steel and the inclusion of songs by Piaf as well as instrumentals in the famous French Musette style. THE OTHER WOMAN: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF NINA SIMONE

7pm doors, 8pm show

★★★★½

“For the full power of Simone’s material to be unlocked Schouw had to fleck those more feverish emotions with a profound sense of vulnerability, and this she did with such conviction that you felt it in your very marrow.” John Shand

“In a voice like dark chocolate, she wrapped vulnerability around a core of steel, her performance culminating in the bitterness, resilience and tragedy of the title song.”                                      Sydney Morning Herald

Sixty years after Nina Simone first recorded ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me’ during a mammoth 13-hour recording session at New York’s Bethlehem records, the acclaimed one-woman show ‘The Other Woman – The Life and Music of Nina Simone’ returns to Sydney’s Camelot Lounge.

Written and performed by former Girl Overboard frontwoman Lisa Schouw, The Other Woman weaves together Simone’s best-loved songs shining a new light on the legendary singer’s celebrated but troubled life. Schouw, together with Musical Director Peter Bailey, lovingly unwraps the layers to reveal Simone’s finest and darkest hours.

Arts critic John Shand wrote of the show that Schouw “immediately establishing that she understood there can be no pretending when conjuring up the spirit of Simone. This had to be about baring the truth, as raw, furious and impassioned as that might be. For the full power of Simone’s material to be unlocked, however, Schouw also had to fleck those more feverish emotions with a profound sense of vulnerability, and this she did with such conviction that you felt it in your very marrow.”

Expect to hear classics such as My Baby Just Cares For Me, House of the Rising Sun, I Loves You Porgy and Four Women. And expect to come away from The Other Woman knowing and feeling things about Simone that you may never have known or felt before.

Over an extensive career Grant-Lee Phillips has earned a reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter – an artist who can deliver lyrical observations with a dry and evocative sense of time and place.

His gift for reconciling classic touchstones with an adventurous sensibility has distinguished his work since he first emerged as the front-man of the acclaimed trio Grant Lee Buffalo in the early ‘90s. At once cinematic in scope and disarmingly intimate, his captivating solo career has explored a variety of modes. Whether it be the electronic inventiveness of Mobilize, acoustic interplay of Virginia Creeper, chamber-pop of Little Moon, meditative solemnity of Walking in the Green Corn, Nashville inspired The Narrows or his latest and most urgent work, Widdershins – Phillips is not one to rest on the accolades of the past. He’s a riveting live performer who thrives onstage. Nevertheless, a new generation have discovered Phillips through his role as the town troubadour on the cult television hit The Gilmore Girls (both in its original run and the 2016 reunion.)

LUCY WISE + EMPIRE STATE ELEVATORS (DOUBLE ALBUM LAUNCH) @ Django
May 24 all-day

Lucy ESE Pic7pm doors, 8pm show

Lucy Wise has delighted audiences across Australia and internationally with her soulful voice, masterful storytelling, and intricate ukulele and guitar playing. Hailing from Margaret River in Australia’s South West, she grew up performing with ‘The Wise Family Band’ until moving to Melbourne in 2009.

Lucys’ songwriting weaves together traditional folk and pop influences with a strong focus on storytelling which is evident in the release of her two albums and two EPs in the last eight years. A seasoned performer, she has played to packed venues both overseas and at home.

“A wonderfully natural singer and uncommonly gifted writer. Prediction: within this decade Lucy will be a noted songster, worldwide.” – Doug Spencer, ABC Radio National.

www.lucywise.com.au

Empire State Elevators’ beautiful folk melodies imbued with jazz harmony prompt soaring improvisations, taking the listener on a curious journey through an inter-dimensional fantasy.

Carl Pannuzzo began writing music for piano and oboe that could be at once melodic and tangential, inviting the expressive voice and improvisational talents of JJessica Foot and subsequently adding kaleidoscopic double bassist Holly Downes (The String Contingent).

Launching their sonically superb debut ‘the rise and fall of…, the Empire State Elevators are redefining the possibilities of ‘uplifting’ music and it’s well worth stepping in for the ride.

Blessed with an angelic voice, deft at lyrical wordplay and armed with a seemingly inexhaustive melody well, Conway – and partner Zygier – create songs which become best friends for life.
Daily Telegraph

Bill Riner, Network, Music Programmer, ABC Local Radio

At the peak of 1990s grunge two girls with guitars blithely flew in the face of fashion and began performing around Sydney’s inner-city pubs as CLUB HOY. Their twin vocal sound & sweet melodic folk pop songs soon cut a fresh swathe through the fuzz guitar of the indie music scene.

LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL: The ultimate vintage hard rock show @ Django
Jun 1 all-day

metak 1a

7pm doors, 9pm show

Classic is a word too often applied to the mediocre. Too easily posted alongside the drab and dreary. It is a phrase too readily conjured for older rock, regardless of its standing.

But It is a dirty word no more.

Long Live Rock and Roll is a show concocted by journeymen of the genre, through decades of blood, sweat and tears on the road. It is more than a tribute to the Gods of rock’n’roll, it is a flashback to a time when the music was simple, but the songs were great.

Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Toto, The Cult, Chuck Berry and Queen are just a few of the great acts to get reborn in this must-watch show. We’ll say no more, and let the music do the talking.

PAUL MCKENNA BAND (Scotland) @ Django
Jun 2 all-day

pk7pm door, 9pm show

“The best folk band to have come out of Scotland in the last twenty years” New York Times

“The best band of their generation” The Living Tradition

“A band with the potential to dominate the Scottish/Irish traditional scene for the next twenty years” Fatea Magazine

Glasgow’s Paul McKenna sees the world as verses and choruses. For over a decade he has travelled the world as a musician, collecting the stories of everyday and exceptional lives. From there come the songs written and sung by a common man with an exceptional voice. His vibrato is immediately recognisable and when he begins to weave a tale, an audience is stilled.

When asked what he wants from the music industry it’s simply – “nothing…I just want to sing songs”. Be it social injustice, inequality or an homage to the wonder and joy of simple things, he sings for us all. His band mates (Ewan Baird, Conor Markey, Robbie Greig, Conal McDonagh) weave exceptional melodies with traditional instrumentation and their sound has carried them all over the world.

Together they push the boundaries of modern Cuban rumba, cha cha chá, Afro-Cuban 6/8, guajira, mambo and more. Latin Jazz Network’s critic Raul de Gama noted that Gai Bryant’s Cuban-based music exudes, “… a wild celebration … a riot of tone colour. Tempos, ensemble and balance – all seem effortless and intuitively right.”

Speacial guest Lazaro Numa-trumpet/vocals, Gai Bryant and Julian Gough saxophones, Lee McIver-trumpet, Danny Carmichael-trombone, Ed Goyer-piano, Duano Martinez-bass, Antonio Marquéz and Giorgio Rojas-percussion with Cuban dancer Adrian Medina.
