cohen IMG_6399 amended 1 A3 small 37

Please note this show is at CITY RECITAL HALL and NOT at Camelot.

After sold out concerts at City Recital Hall in 2017 & 2018, Triple ARIA-winning ensemble Monsieur Camembert (plus very special guests) return in 2019 to celebrate Leonard Cohen’s 85th birthday! Drawing on Leonard Cohen material that spans some 35 years, Monsieur Camembert’s critically acclaimed show traverses styles rarely if ever associated with Cohen, including Swing, jazz, tango, Latin, klezmer etc. Linking the songs with Cohen’s remarkable poetry and prose, the show also features audio fragments of Cohen himself…

For 13 years, Monsieur Camembert has been touring this ARIA-nominated show, playing capacity concert halls nationally and internationally, including headlining the prestigious International Leonard Cohen Festival in Canada.

“Monsieur Camembert simultaneously generates fresh perspectives on Cohen’s astonishing work and exposes deeper truths… a must for Cohen and Camembert fans alike” (John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald)

“If you like Leonard Cohen, you ought hear Monsieur Camembert’s Famous Blue Cheese. You more especially ought hear it if you dislike Leonard Cohen: here’s your cure for received notions/ nonsense about Cohen as a byword for gloom! Spirited, musically assured, eclectic and downright fun. They never imitate Cohen, but do right by him, with glee…and sensitivity.” (Doug Spencer, Weekend Planet, ABC Radio National)

The SICARIOS will be focusing on the late Tom Petty’s music, with special guests  Dave Warner, Martin Cilia (Mentals, The Atlantics) and Nicole Warner!

“The SICARIOS excel at something that few other bands have been able to truly nail. They take classics from three heavyweights and not only do they honour the music completely – which they do with rich harmonies, steely guitar riffs and rhythms, and total cohesion – drummer and frontman Lloyd G, manages to inject entirely new layers of meaning and significance to the music.

By sharing his relationship to these seminal tunes, Lloyd’s reverence and respect for the music that shaped him as an inquisitive young man from Burma growing up in Australia, further elevates the music. And that’s not even to say how he perfectly captures the vocal timbres of Fogerty, Petty and Young.

Don’t be fooled into thinking The SICARIOS are just another run of the mill tribute show. This band will have you captivated from start to finish, and you truly won’t want the show to end!

“In a voice like dark chocolate, she wrapped vulnerability around a core of steel” (SMH). 60 years after Nina Simone first recorded ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me’ during a mammoth 13-hour recording session, this acclaimed one-woman show returns to Camelot! Written & performed by former Girl Overboard frontwoman Lisa Schouw,

The Other Woman weaves together Simone’s best-loved songs shining a new light on the legendary singer’s celebrated but troubled life. Schouw, together with Musical Director Peter Bailey, lovingly unwraps the layers to reveal Simone’s finest & darkest hours. Arts critic John Shand wrote of the show that Schouw “immediately establishing that she understood there can be no pretending when conjuring up the spirit of Simone. This had to be about baring the truth, as raw, furious & impassioned as that might be. For the full power of Simone’s material to be unlocked, however, Schouw also had to fleck those more feverish emotions with a profound sense of vulnerability, & this she did with such conviction that you felt it in your very marrow.”

Expect to hear classics such as My Baby Just Cares For Me, House of the Rising Sun, I Loves You Porgy & Four Women. And expect to come away from The Other Woman knowing & feeling things about Simone that you may never have known or felt before.

Oct 17 all-day

lucie a0708505068_10 crop7pm door, 8pm show

Painting landscapes with dream-soaked synths, irresistible beats, poetry and pathos, Lucie Thorne presents her extraordinary new art/pop concept album Kitty & Frank. With Kitty & Frank, Thorne traces the wild true stories of young frontier woman Kitty Walsh and her lover, the charismatic bandit Frank Gardiner. In the 1860’s Gold Fever came to Wheogo NSW and like Deadwood, it didn’t end well. Inhabiting a sonic world that calls to mind a meeting of David Bowie’s Blackstar and Kate Bush’s Ariel, via Grimes and Alice Coltrane, Kitty & Frank spans a tale of Shakespearean proportions. All this at the hands of one of Australia’s finest song-poets who has ventured to triumphant new ground with staggering certitude.

Lucie is touring far and wide throughout the spring to celebrate the album’s release – and for the Sydney show she’ll be joined by stellar bandmates Hamish Stuart (drums), Matt McMahon (keys) and Alice Williams (bass & harmonies).

7pm doors, 9pm show

Chris Gudu has toured and shared the stage with some of Africa’s greatest legends such as Hugh Masekela, Angelique Kidjo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo & more. For this very special night, The Chris Gudu Band will be joined by special guests Khaliphani & Tarisai Vushe to pay tribute to Johnny Clegg & Miriam Makeba. Providing the backing vocals will be a trio of Ngaire, Thandi & Nazra. The show will be jam packed with irresistible umbaqanga / township jive music & lots of dancing as they celebrate these 2 legends & their legacy.

To say South Africa has a rich heritage of music is an understatement, producing countless international icons such as Mahotela Queens, Hugh Masekela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Stimela, Soul Brother, Soweto Gospel Choir, to name but a few. In recent times many of us have been left broken-hearted at the passing of one such legend – a true ambassador of township jive & kwela music straight from the streets of Soweto. Johnny Clegg, a much celebrated pioneer & an unparalleled exponent of South African rhythms sadly passed away on 16 July 2019 after a long illness. He has left the world a priceless gift of his music well documented on his recordings.

Long before the legendary Johnny Clegg made his presence felt in the music scene internationally the township jive & kwela (umbaqanga) music of South Africa was already well known, celebrated, danced to & sung along to across all the four corners of the globe. It is the true heroes of the music from that part of the continent who paved the way for superstars like Clegg & many others ahead of their time. Among those heroes was none other than Miriam Makeba, the mother of African Music, better known to her fans as Mama Africa. She passed away on 9 November 2008 leaving a musical vacuum that only she could fill.

A party like no other with dance music from Africa, Cuba, The Balkans, Russia, Spain, France, Italy, with styles ranging from wild Eastern European Gypsy music to Cuban Salsa and Zimbabwe township tunes.

“For two decades Marsala has been turning music from all around the world into one repertoire, and people from around the world into one audience. Every groove was somewhere between vibrant and irresistible, and virtually every solo raised the stakes of its host song, whether it was Khusid’s diamond-edged trumpet blazing on Dark Eyes or Stojcevski’s machine-gun alto on Wedding Cocek. For 140 minutes this was music as art and for dancing all at once; music for going a little crazy. And the community that goes crazy together sticks together.” John Shand SMH

20 Years of ‘CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD’: A Tribute To The Music Of LUCINDA WILLIAMS @ Django
Oct 24 all-day

rs-214806-lucindsa7pm doors, 8pm show

Lucinda Williams’s “Car Wheels On A Gravel Road” was released 20 years ago, at a time when the new “alternative country” movement was taking shape and refining its style and purpose. This breakthrough album, by an artist that didn’t fit into the standard mould of what it was to be a ‘country artist’ despite being acknowledged within the country community as a significant songwriting and performing talent, became an important ‘ground zero’ marker point for the “Americana” scene and continues to inspire artists and define what it takes to BE an artist in that genre.

“20 years of Car Wheels” is a celebration of that album, and some of Lucinda Williams’s enviable catalogue. Led by one of Australia’s best Alt.Country voices, Katie Brianna, and producer/multi instrumentalist Michael Carpenter, and featuring vocalists Brielle Davis (Not Good With Horses) and Peta Caswell, and a house band featuring Carpenter, Casey Atkins, Mike Rix and Russell Crawford, the show is a celebration of not only an important artist and album but also a genre that continues to grow in Sydney and Australia.

A Night Of Gypsy Swing with TINEL DRAGOI & JOSEPH ZARB + THE CAMERON JONES TRIO feat. ASAHI TAKAHASHI @ Django
Oct 31 all-day

unnamed (2)7pm doors, 8pm show

Join us for a night of Gypsy and Gypsy Swing music at Django At Camelot. A concert full of l’amour de la vie and musical virtuosity featuring Joseph Zarb (Marsala) performing in a stunning duo setting with master of authentic gypsy violin Tinel Dragoi, plus the Cameron Jones Trio.

For Gypsies, music is religion and music comes from faith and from the soul. So whether we are in Paris or Bucharest, playing Swing or Bolero. The soul of the music tastes the same. Tinel Dragoi is from Romania; Rom Gypsy Father, Romanian Jewish Mother. Violin was his only option in life. Jose lives his professional life on the streets of Sydney, Gypsy Style, playing on every street corner. The combination is like an electrical storm in the Bohemian Mountains.

Cameron Jones (Spyglass Gypsies, Gadjo Guitars) is musician who draws inspiration from the driving rhythms and melodic honesty of the acoustic gypsy jazz guitar. In 2018 Jones recorded The Waterfall Way, his first album under his name, an album that draws repertoire and inspiration from his travels to France and The Netherlands. Journeys to the very heart and soul of the gypsy jazz music.

“It was several years ago when I first saw and heard Cameron Jones play guitar with the superb Gypsy Swing group ‘Spyglass Gypsies”. I remember being most impressed with his understanding and execution of the Gypsy Swing style. Since then I’ve not only had the pleasure of watching him grow in stature both as a player and composer, but also of jamming with him at the OzManouche Festival.” Hank B Marvin

Eric Clapton’s career has spanned over 6 decades. Lauded as being the greatest guitarist of all time, his roots are firmly embedded in the blues tradition of which he remains both a student & visionary. In his unforgettable ‘Unplugged’ Concert, the music was minimalist, alternating between reworked major hits such as ‘Layla’, the traditional blues of Robert Johnson & Bo Diddley, and new songs , including ‘Tears in Heaven’, that were an outpouring & expression of a very difficult period of his life.

It was honest, real, fun, at times raw, & very very special!

Like many guitarists the world over, Mark Shelley was inspired by Eric Clapton . “the way he makes that guitar speak from his heart & soul, ….as a young man, well it just blew me away & I wanted so badly to be able to do the same. I enjoy playing this show so much, it is such a privilege to do so”

Formed at art school in 1976 Mental As Anything are now commemorating the 40th anniversary of their first 1978 record Mental As Anything Plays At Your Party.

The present line-up of the band features original singer keyboardist Greedy Smith; ex Atlantics guitarist Martin Cilia; drummer Jacob Cook; guitarist vocalist Craig Gordon and bassist vocalist Peter Gray.

Greedy is keen to show off this latest version of the Mentals to display their reverence for the original recordings and turning out fine new original material.

“The response we’ve been getting over the past twelve months from punters all over the country has told me that now is the time to show off this set with this line-up. People have been very concerned and understanding about Martin pulling out due to cancer and I’ve felt a responsibility to bring the band as close as I can back to the original recordings to protect the legacy.”

LLOYD SPIEGEL ALBUM LAUNCH
Nov 16 all-day

Lloyd7pm doors, 9pm show

Acoustic Blues master Lloyd Spiegel is proud to announce the release of his 10th album ‘Cut and Run’ and is headed to Sydney to launch the album at Camelot and to get people acquainted with the new tracks, and is not a show to miss for those who love incredible guitar playing, great songs and the odd tall tale.

As Lloyd celebrates his 30th year on tour in 2019, he can’t recall a time before playing guitar. Picking up the instrument at age four, Lloyd played his first professional show at age ten and was touring the east coast of Australia at 12. By 16 he was on tour in the United States, cutting his teeth as a true travelling blues man. Lloyd’s travels not only honed his craft, earned him a swag of awards and brought him to take counsel with the founding fathers of modern blues – it taught him the most important part of being a blues musician: connecting with everyday people.

Lloyd has toured extensively throughout Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan, viewing himself as a social worker more than anything else – someone to help people forget about their worries for a few hours and put a smile on their face.

THE PRAGMATICS: A VERY PRAGMATIC NEW YEARS EVE @ Django
Dec 31 all-day

Pragmatics8pm doors

Rounding out their fifth year of raucous classic rock, soul and delicious surprises, The Pragmatics invite you to share with them that holiest of party nights, NYE, at the intimate and magnificent Django Bar, in sun-soaked Marrickville.

Joined by a selection of special guests, including The Brassmatics horn section, The Prags will deliver three swinging sets of ragged glory, til well past midnight.

The Prags have sold out every Camelot show (!) to a devoted throng who are on their feet with hands in the air thanks to a unique selection of shout-out-loud anthems and deep cut discoveries. Here’s why…

Imagine a band that grooves through Motown: The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. Then, like a Queenslander on Bundy, gets punchy with Bowie, Queen, Accadacca, The Jam and Thin Lizzy. Or, with morning-after regret, sings harmony-laden tracks from The Band, Bee Gees, Beatles, Joe Cocker, Fleetwood Mac and Rod Stewart. And then, with a fresh application of lippy and a scrunchy, combines 80s classics from Dexy’s Midnight Runners, INXS, Simple Minds, Style Council, Tears for Fears, Johnny Cougar, Bryan Adams, Billy Bragg and more! With horns!

You’re right, it doesn’t make sense! Where is the logic? The through-line! The principles!

Whatever. This is Pragmatic. We’re gonna have a party.

Get in early to avoid disappointment.

Classic is a word too often applied to the mediocre. Too easily posted alongside the drab and dreary. It is a phrase too readily conjured for older rock, regardless of its standing.

But It is a dirty word no more.

Long Live Rock and Roll is a show concocted by journeymen of the genre, through decades of blood, sweat and tears on the road. It is more than a tribute to the Gods of rock’n’roll, it is a flashback to a time when the music was simple, but the songs were great.

Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Toto, The Cult, Chuck Berry and Queen are just a few of the great acts to get reborn in this must-watch show. We’ll say no more, and let the music do the talking.

French pop folk superstar Tété is returning to Australia for the first time in 7 years to celebrate the release of his seventh, and latest album ‘Fauthentique’. Be it fake news, conspiracy theories or lies from public figures, the news keeps reminding us that these distortions of reality are now part of our daily life.

Tété’s new album comes as a reverse question to this unforeseen present: “How can one be sure about one’s perception?” Hence the “Fauthentique” concept, the expression being French for “falsely authentic”. The recording comes across as a sort of melodic make-believe odyssey, built upon organic programming. Falsely naive. Falsely acoustic. Fauthentique.

Tété is very excited to be returning to Australia to share these 12 new songs from “Fauthentique”, along with classic tunes from across his career.

“If you like pop sensibilities with lyrical depth, Tété should definitely be on your radar.” Soultrain

“Tété ought to be crowned France’s folk king.” Paste Magazine

©Martin Philbey Tex Perkins - The Beasts of Bourbon 15th February 2007 Melbourne - Australia All Rights Reserved

7pm doors, 8pm show

Tex Perkins has played a key role in Australian music It’s understandably difficult to pull together a coherent picture of a man whose career has taken in everything from the groundbreaking experimental punktonica of Sydney mid-80s noiseniks Thug to the lilting, dark country of his recent material with the Dark Horses.

From the hard edged pub rock of the Beasts Of Bourbon’s, a snarling slice of filthy pub rock to the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea.. Then there’s the Tex, Don & Charlie albums, which saw Perkins joining forces with the legendary Don Walker, Cold Chisel’s pianist and master songwriter and son of the Clarence Valley, and Charlie Owen, previously Australia’s best kept musical secret.

Now is Tex’s exciting new (and long over due) collaboration with Matt Walker (a great artist in his own right) for duo shows. It’s a blues swamp-groove kinda thing that’s a little reminiscent of some of the things in Tex’s back catalogue. Many new originals inhabit the setlist, but see them now while they still have to flesh out the set with a few Cruel Sea covers! “Tex has the swagger, presence and indomitable attitude that comes from years of fronting some of Australia’s most intense and spirited rock’n’roll bands.

7pm doors, 9pm show

Feb 13 all-day

DW7pm doors, 8pm show

The Suburbs set will feature some classics plus a fair bit of spoken word. `Poetry and the spoken word monologues work well in the intimate space of the Django, but don’t worry if you’re a har-core Suburbs fan, Girls Wank and many other rock tracks will be on the set-list too,’

Nicole Warner has many times sung back-up for husband, Dave “Suburban Boy” Warner, and has several times opened the show with a few numbers of her own but for this show she will be sharing the bill. The gig marks the release of her second single `Forever and a Day’ the title track of her debut album due out end of March.

SMOOTH SAILING YACHT ROCK PARTY @ Django
Feb 14 all-day

YachtRock_April2019-68

7pm doors, 9pm show

Do you like piña coladas? Ever found yourself caught between the moon and New York City?

For one night only, the Smooth Sailing Yacht Rock Party will take over Django @ Camelot for a celebration of everything yacht. Yacht rock was the music of the late 1970s and early 1980s that was the polar opposite of punk: think gentle singer-songwriter melodies, backed by session musicians playing some slowed-down disco funk. It’s music that, let’s face it, was completely daggy, but which you completely love anyway: think the likes of Michael McDonald, Toto, Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, Boz Scaggs and the Captain & Tennille.

The Smooth Sailing Yacht Rock Party features an crack 13-piece band, complete with horns and backing vocalists, featuring musicians who’ve played with the likes of Josh Pyke, Lazy Susan, The Lee & Nancy Experience, and Suzy & The Snakepit. Aside from playing some of the songs that got to the top of the Yachtest 100, there’ll be cocktails, a yacht rock-themed photobooth setup, and captains hats galore. And with beats this smooth, you’ll steer your ship to the dancefloor.
