THE PRAGMATICS: A VERY PRAGMATIC NEW YEARS EVE @ Django (SOLD OUT!)
Dec 31 all-day

Pragmatics8pm doors

Rounding out their fifth year of raucous classic rock, soul and delicious surprises, The Pragmatics invite you to share with them that holiest of party nights, NYE, at the intimate and magnificent Django Bar, in sun-soaked Marrickville.

Joined by a selection of special guests, including The Brassmatics horn section, The Prags will deliver three swinging sets of ragged glory, til well past midnight.

The Prags have sold out every Camelot show (!) to a devoted throng who are on their feet with hands in the air thanks to a unique selection of shout-out-loud anthems and deep cut discoveries. Here’s why…

Imagine a band that grooves through Motown: The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. Then, like a Queenslander on Bundy, gets punchy with Bowie, Queen, Accadacca, The Jam and Thin Lizzy. Or, with morning-after regret, sings harmony-laden tracks from The Band, Bee Gees, Beatles, Joe Cocker, Fleetwood Mac and Rod Stewart. And then, with a fresh application of lippy and a scrunchy, combines 80s classics from Dexy’s Midnight Runners, INXS, Simple Minds, Style Council, Tears for Fears, Johnny Cougar, Bryan Adams, Billy Bragg and more! With horns!

You’re right, it doesn’t make sense! Where is the logic? The through-line! The principles!

Whatever. This is Pragmatic. We’re gonna have a party.

Get in early to avoid disappointment.

Curtis Eller is a banjo player, songwriter and rock & roll singer. A twenty-year show business veteran, Eller and his band The American Circus have developed a devoted international following based on dynamic, highly physical stage performances and an extensive catalog of curious phonographic recordings.

Eller is a gifted and prolific songwriter who’s banjo-driven songs describe a dreamlike vision of American history where all points in time have collapsed into one. The band is thrilled to announce the release of their latest and most ambitious full-length album, A Poison Melody, on which they have augmented their indelicate, rock & roll rhythms with a tempestuous cloud of horns and a graceless choir of backsliders in their quest to bring Eller’s historically evocative compositions to vivid, cinematic life.

Melding the earthiness of folk, dexterity of jazz and the craft of classical, Chaika’s vast influences create superb genre-blending music that transcends labels. “Like a gust of wind ushering in a new season of possibilities … Arrow, as the title suggests, offered listeners a new direction in Australian Folk music, an innovative blend of beautifully crafted pieces.” (What’s on Sydney)

Jan 1 all-day

David parker Suburbs 1978 001 (2) 7pm doors, 8pm show

Released at the end of 1978, Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs album Mugs Game was the definitive Australian album of the era, striking such a chord with the ignored kids of Australia’s suburbs, that it rocketed up the charts and went gold within three months.

Around this time on his Rolling Thunder Tour, Bob Dylan declared Dave Warner, along with Richard Clapton, as his favourite Australian artist. But a year and one album later, tired of life on the road and looking for new challenges, that Suburbs line-up split.

Now, with the exception of Johnny who died in 2005, all the members of the band who recorded Mugs Game are heading back on the road for a short reunion tour. There will also be a vinyl re-issue of the original album with an extra album of early, unreleased material from 1976 and 1977.

After all, forty years on not that much has changed – it is still … a Mugs Game.

DRAGON 24A

7pm doors, 9pm show

Dragon are back, fronted by the legendary kiwi singer Mark Williams. This version of Dragon rocks its way through a long list of iconic songs that are part of the national estate.

Bass player, Todd Hunter has reformed the band after a much needed break of 10 years. Todd and Mark are joined by Canadian guitar slinger, Bruce Reid and drum wizard Pete Drummond.

The band is known for anthems like April Sun In Cuba, Are You Old Enough, Rain, Speak No Evil, Young Years, This Time, Sunshine, Celebrate and Dreams of Ordinary Men. Todd and Marc Hunter started the band in 1973 and Dragon sold over 2 million records over 30 years.

The current live show evolves from an intimate acoustic beginning to a spirited, electric, crowd rousing finale. Mark Williams sings each song in a way that is familiar to the audience but completely his own and strong playing and sublime vocal harmonies have the crowd singing along as if everyone on the room is in the band. Dragon manages to reframe 30 years of Australian musical history into one coherent picture and do justice to a great collection of timeless songs.

“This is surely the best a capella act in the land” John Shand, SMH

“While superficially a comedy act, the Spooky Men are also fine close harmony singers, their tuning, timing and dynamics impeccable.” The Independent (London)

LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL: The ultimate vintage hard rock show @ Django

Classic is a word too often applied to the mediocre. Too easily posted alongside the drab and dreary. It is a phrase too readily conjured for older rock, regardless of its standing.

But It is a dirty word no more.

Long Live Rock and Roll is a show concocted by journeymen of the genre, through decades of blood, sweat and tears on the road. It is more than a tribute to the Gods of rock’n’roll, it is a flashback to a time when the music was simple, but the songs were great.

Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Toto, The Cult, Chuck Berry and Queen are just a few of the great acts to get reborn in this must-watch show. We’ll say no more, and let the music do the talking.

Tété’s new album comes as a reverse question to this unforeseen present: “How can one be sure about one’s perception?” Hence the “Fauthentique” concept, the expression being French for “falsely authentic”. The recording comes across as a sort of melodic make-believe odyssey, built upon organic programming. Falsely naive. Falsely acoustic. Fauthentique.

Tété is very excited to be returning to Australia to share these 12 new songs from “Fauthentique”, along with classic tunes from across his career.

Atmospheric, passionate, brooding, melodic, at times downright swaggeringly cool, and full of a mesmerising and captivating musical and lyrical diversity, Liz Martin is a powerful and distinctive Australian music talent. ‘Evocative, alluring and strangely comforting’ – Tim Ritchie, ABC RN ‘From play one, I felt an instant connection and obviously I was not alone. Every spin on FBi provoked listener response, which I can assure is not the norm’ – Stephen Ferris FBi

©Martin Philbey Tex Perkins - The Beasts of Bourbon 15th February 2007 Melbourne - Australia All Rights Reserved

7pm doors, 8pm show

Tex Perkins has played a key role in Australian music It’s understandably difficult to pull together a coherent picture of a man whose career has taken in everything from the groundbreaking experimental punktonica of Sydney mid-80s noiseniks Thug to the lilting, dark country of his recent material with the Dark Horses.

From the hard edged pub rock of the Beasts Of Bourbon’s, a snarling slice of filthy pub rock to the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea.. Then there’s the Tex, Don & Charlie albums, which saw Perkins joining forces with the legendary Don Walker, Cold Chisel’s pianist and master songwriter and son of the Clarence Valley, and Charlie Owen, previously Australia’s best kept musical secret.

Now is Tex’s exciting new (and long over due) collaboration with Matt Walker (a great artist in his own right) for duo shows. It’s a blues swamp-groove kinda thing that’s a little reminiscent of some of the things in Tex’s back catalogue. Many new originals inhabit the setlist, but see them now while they still have to flesh out the set with a few Cruel Sea covers! “Tex has the swagger, presence and indomitable attitude that comes from years of fronting some of Australia’s most intense and spirited rock’n’roll bands.

This breakthrough album, by an artist that didn’t fit into the standard mould of what it was to be a ‘country artist’ despite being acknowledged within the country community as a significant songwriting and performing talent, became an important ‘ground zero’ marker point for the “Americana” scene and continues to inspire artists and define what it takes to BE an artist in that genre.

“20 years of Car Wheels” is a celebration of that album, and some of Lucinda Williams’s enviable catalogue. Led by one of Australia’s best Alt.Country voices, Katie Brianna, and producer/multi instrumentalist Michael Carpenter, and featuring vocalists Brielle Davis (Not Good With Horses) and Peta Caswell, and a house band featuring Carpenter, Casey Atkins, Mike Rix and Russell Crawford, the show is a celebration of not only an important artist and album but also a genre that continues to grow in Sydney and Australia.

VINCE JONES (SOLD OUT!)
Mar 8 all-day

Vince Jones6pm doors, 7pm show

Vince Jones has set the benchmark for Australian Jazz singers since his emergence in the jazz clubs of Melbourne in the late 70s and early 80s. His 20 album, international career has never hesitated in its musical evolution – a career played in the moment. He is that rare genre-defying artist who creates music without borders. From Iris DeMent’s folk “Our Town” to his original piano heavy, new age “Wonderworld”, he comments, sometimes uncomfortably, about the world we live in, from an unashamedly idealistic perspective.

His intuitive readings of the Great American Songbook are sensitively true to composer and artist. He is a wonderful trumpet player as his style has developed a distinctive reserve and subtlety. He plays a little less and draws a good deal more from it than he did in early days. A brief solo from Vince is worth a hundred notes played with less discretion. Particular about the musical company he keeps, he continues to enjoy playing with the best jazz musicians the country has to offer. He is, quite simply, a national treasure.

LOUIS TILLETT & THE LT3

IMG_51177pm doors, 8pm show

Louis brings the core of his band The Art of Darkness to light in a new and exciting combo, as we premiere the LT3, and it’s combined experience of 100 years of live playing, right here in Marrickville. This is something you are unlikely to see on a regular basis.

Louis, with his trademark baritone vocals and blues/rock piano style, combines with John Maddox’ unique virtuosity on Bass and Colin Watson’s thoroughbred Guitar expertise and feel, to bring Louis’ repertoire into a dangerous new place. You may remember Louis from his dozen “solo” albums and pioneering improv ensembles like Paris Green, or his thunderous big bands, such as The Aspersion Caste. He has also been a featured pianist on recordings of such legendary Australian acts as Died Pretty, Beasts of Bourbon, Laughing Clowns, and Tex, Don & Charlie, and many others. In International circuits he is billed as the Rockpoet of The Night, and he is held in the same high esteem and written and filmed in the same publications and TV specials as his peers John Cale, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave and Tom Waits. UK Rolling Stone called him The Dark Giant.

He rarely plays in Australia, preferring to “ride on the tide and the wings of the wind”, as so much of his music alludes to, him being a full time sailor. After more than 2 years since The Art of Darkness last played, which filled The Factory Theatre in 2017 and 2015, this night will present a rare opportunity to catch Louis in an intimate and dynamic environment, where, keeping the band small and tight, each performance takes on it’s own life and direction, leaving all three players to leave the script, to allow them to take the music where it needs to go at that particular time. Louis Tillett, as a musician and a bandleader is synonymous with the Sydney Live and Underground music of the 80s, 90s and 00s. Come and find out why he is often touted as a National Living Treasure.

Session 1: 6pm – 8:30pm | Show 7pm (60-70 mins)
Session 2: 9pm – 11:00pm | Show 9:30pm (60-70 min)

The Australian prince of indie-pop broke through with his ukulele anthem ‘Stupid’ in 2013 and debut E.P. ‘funbang1.’ The 2016 release sparked three singles including Tectonic and Free To Love while gathering global controversy for his music video House of Air which the New Yorker quoted, “Should never be viewed in any public setting.”
Likened to a lofi meeting of Robyn and Talking Heads, Brendan released his first LP titled, And The Boyfriends in 2019. The album, his first entry in the ARIA Top 20 Album Charts, saw him exploring more complex lyricism with a newfound subtlety in his vocal performance, built upon his atypically brilliant observational wit and wordplay.

Lovers of cabaret will remember Maclean from his star run in the original production Velvet, featuring Marcia Hines and his performance with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Praying For Time, a tribute to George Michael. Other notable highlights include his cameo as Klipspringer in Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby and more recently his sold out performance at New York’s Club Cumming.

Join Brendan Maclean performing his greatest hits and some other bits, solo on the house baby grand at Camelot Lounge.

Making a return to Django, Moulin Roque is a sophisticated cabaret rock show featuring Susannah Mirana. It draws upon years of this versatile artist’s experience and ‘genre-hopping’ to deliver a multi-faceted performance via an eclectic mix of alternative rock, new wave and dark wave music.

Accompanied by a stellar band including Clare O’Meara (John Williamson), Jess Ciampa (Jeff Duff), Paul Najar (Wa Wa Nee) and Eddy Santacreu, she delves into the catalogues of artists as diverse as k.d. lang, Elvis Costello, and Nirvana. Each song gets its own treatment; from high energy, rock pieces to stripped-down instrumentations revealing lustful lyrical content with undertones of jealousy and seduction. Susannah’s performance stretches from darkly dramatic to quirky, producing moments of intensity and frivolity. Moulin Roque is a truly unique musical experience not to be missed.

MIRIAM LIEBERMAN TRIO @ Django
Sep 6 all-day

miriam6:00pm – 8:00pm | Show 6:30pm (60-70 mins)

“Something of a renaissance woman… Somehow she achieves the almost impossible in blending patterned western-ed pop writing with the earthy mystique of African rhythms and freaky world instruments.” – Sydney City News

This Sydney based singer songwriter is known not only for her unmistakable voice and songwriting, but for playing the 21 string West African harp, known as the kora. Miriam draws her influences from far and wide – having most notably spent long periods of time studying traditional music in West Africa.

Her songs seamlessly blend African influences with folk infused melodies. In essence, they are a collection of stories, beautifully told through strings, powerful lyrics and her emotive voice. Playing kora as well as acoustic guitar, Miriam is joined by exceptional string players – Lara Goodridge and Susie Bishop. Adding their sublime strings and lush vocal harmonies, there is a chemistry between these musicians and their instruments that melds into a soaring beautiful soundscape.

Session 2: 8:30pm – 10:30pm | Show 9:00pm (60-70 min)

We invite you to celebrate one the greatest and influential guitar players of all time.

Peter Green was an English blues rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. As the founder of Fleetwood Mac, he was inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll hall of fame in 1998. Green’s songs, such as “Albatross”, “Black Magic Woman”, Oh Well, “The Green Mahalishi” and “Man Of The World”, appeared on singles charts, and several have been adapted by a variety of musicians.
Green was a major figure in the “second great epoch” of the British blues movement. Eric Clapton praised his guitar playing, and B.B King commented, “He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats. Green was interested in expressing emotion in his songs, rather than showing off how fast he could play. His trademark sound included string bending, vibrato, and economy of style.

join us on a journey from Peter’s early days with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers to his brilliant work with Fleetwood Mac, plus some of his later solo works this is a night not to miss.

Featuring Drey Rollan on guitar and vocals, Antero Ceschin on drums, Scott Leishman on bass and Johnny G on Keyboards
