BRONWYN EATHER (ALBUM LAUNCH) + ALICE TERRY @ Django Bar
Oct 22 @ 8:00 pm

bron6pm doors, 8pm Show

One of the last albums to be recorded and mixed at Brian Campeau’s renowned Plex Recording Studio in St Peters, Against The Tide is Bronwyn’s second release and her first full-length album.

Her music never strays too far from a love of language and performance, and her songs track the winding paths of heart and mind, from the sparse desert to the raucous streets.

Bronwyn’s archtop guitar with subtle tremolo plays well with the colours of her voice. This brings her new songs to a different space, delightful and charming, somewhere between folk and jazz and melodic country rock. Her band has warmed to these unique songs and adds layers of drama and beauty.

This year Bronwyn celebrates her birthday and the album release on the one Django-inspired evening. Supported by Alice Terry. Come! Join the party!   Every ticket receives the new album. Free!!

Alice Terry sounds like she’s had three husbands and killed them all.
Since leaving her small coastal town of Moruya, Terry has impressed her ever-growing audiences with her big voice and beautiful songs, and has deservedly earned the title of ‘Sydney’s first lady of blues’. She effortlessly combines the best parts of folk, jazz and blues, and creates this music which is both sexy and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Simple and honest, her songs will move you.

On this night, will be the debut performance of Nikki and The Wolf, the new electric act featuring Rafael Lobo. The chemistry between Nikki and Rafael is palpable and allows them to really open up to where the music wants to go. Their new material is raw, lyrical, playful, and a little bit psychedelic. DUSTY RAVENS (Album Launch) + THE TALL GRASS @ Django Bar
Nov 4 @ 7:30 pm

dusty ravens 6pm doors, 9pm show

Death Rides a Horse, but it has a great soundtrack. Sydney’s favourite outlaw country inspired, mariachi infused band, Dusty Ravens, are back to launch their second album Low Down Jimmy.

“The two obvious reference points are the Mexicali sounds of Calexico and Morricone’s western soundtracks, yet the band add their own distinct stylings to the mix, with shades of gothic cow-punk (The Gun Club etc) in the foreboding subject matter and often shadowy atmosphere.” Chris Familton, Rhythms Magazine

Songs from the saddle and the jail cell. Regret? Sure, Redemption, sometimes. Entertainment, ear worms, and tunes you can whistle? Definitely.

Very special guests The Tall Grass will be opening the night.

SAM OUTLAW (USA) + COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS (USA)
Dec 3 all-day

dec 37pm doors, 8pm show

Love Police Touring are delighted to announce the return of Sam Outlaw to Australia along with special guest Courtney Marie Andrews!

Sam Outlaw, who has graced our shores and stages twice before, will this time bring with him a brilliant new album “Tenderheart” which was released in April of this year. The 13-track collection of originals was met with rave reviews including The Australian newspaper who said in it’s 4.5 Star review “On his second album the 34-year-old delivers a gem infused with the musical history of his adopted city, as well as Nashville, Austin and every dance hall and honky tonk in between.” while Rolling Stone Magazine Australia gave it a 4 Star review and called “Tenderheart” “an assured step forward for this rising country star.”

After being embraced and shown the love by audiences in Australia on her tour here earlier this year the amazingly talented Courtney Marie Andrews is coming back. At just 16 years old, Andrews left home in Arizona for her first tour. Travelling up and down the West Coast of the USA, busking and playing anywhere that would have her. Soon after, she took a Greyhound bus four nights straight from Phoenix to New York to do the same on the East Coast. Her 2016 album “Honest Life”, the follow up to the stellar “On My Page,” has been praised by media universally with the UK’s Daily Telegraph saying “the poetic economy of her lyrics is right up there with such masters of the country vignette as Guy Clark and John Prine…a truly substantial talent.” That’s some big associations right there.

This December the future of Americana will be shown to be in the excellent hands of Sam Outlaw and Courtney Marie Andrews. Do not miss it.

CLUB HOY (Trio) + CARUS THOMPSON @ Django (SOLD OUT!!!)
Mar 8 all-day

club hoy carus 1a7pm doors, 8pm show

Don’t miss this very special double bill from two wonderful acoustic acts:

CLUB HOY (trio)

At the peak of 1990s grunge two girls with guitars blithely flew in the face of fashion and began performing around Sydney’s inner-city pubs as Club Hoy. Their twin vocal sound and sweet melodic folk pop songs soon cut a fresh swathe through the fuzz guitar of the indie music scene.

In 1993, Penny Flanagan and Julia Richardson decided to go their separate ways and pursue individual music careers.

20 years on, the girls have come together again with the purest objective: to play old songs and enjoy each others company. No record business, no pressure, just the joy of music and shared memories. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see them perform in trio mode.

CARUS THOMPSON

Globe trotting troubadour Carus Thompson has done it the hard way. Independent, with no commercial radio play, self-managed and funded he’s toured the world alongside The John Butler Trio, The Waifs, Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson & Pete Murray, selling over 30,000 albums along the way.

He’s won his loyal fan base through 20 years of hitting the road, one punter, one gig, one tour at a time, always delivering passionate, energetic, folk-rocking shows that entertain and engage.

This is the third and final tour for his lauded ISLAND album, before he takes a break to start writing for album number seven. Don’t miss one of this countries finest pub-rock acoustic singer-songwriters.

May 4 all-day

DRAGON 24A

7pm doors, 9pm show

Dragon are back, fronted by the legendary kiwi singer Mark Williams. This version of Dragon rocks its way through a long list of iconic songs that are part of the national estate.

Bass player, Todd Hunter has reformed the band after a much needed break of 10 years. Todd and Mark are joined by Canadian guitar slinger, Bruce Reid and drum wizard Pete Drummond.

The band is known for anthems like April Sun In Cuba, Are You Old Enough, Rain, Speak No Evil, Young Years, This Time, Sunshine, Celebrate and Dreams of Ordinary Men. Todd and Marc Hunter started the band in 1973 and Dragon sold over 2 million records over 30 years.

The current live show evolves from an intimate acoustic beginning to a spirited, electric, crowd rousing finale. Mark Williams sings each song in a way that is familiar to the audience but completely his own and strong playing and sublime vocal harmonies have the crowd singing along as if everyone on the room is in the band. Dragon manages to reframe 30 years of Australian musical history into one coherent picture and do justice to a great collection of timeless songs.

CHASING THE MOON @ Django

Chasing-the-Moon-2a

7pm doors, 8pm show

“like walking through a music festival in an Eastern European village” Simon Marnie, ABC Radio

Chasing the Moon brings alive the exuberant and romantic sounds of Gypsy Jazz in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.

There is a fresh flavour to the way different styles are combined, – a mouth-watering mix of hot club and the blues, a dash of folk, lashings of swing, flirting with Latin rhythms and modern elements too. The joy is infectious. The 6 piece ensemble envelopes you in an almost orchestral sound combining vocals, violin, guitar, double bass, sax, piano accordion and drums. The darkly chromatic gypsy sound is counterpointed with the light hearted flair of American swing and the ambience of the Parisian café is there in the accordion of Garry Steel and the inclusion of songs by Piaf as well as instrumentals in the famous French Musette style. Kathy Bluff – Vocals and Violin Paul Burjan – Saxophones and Flute John Blenkhorn – Guitar Garry Steel – Piano Accordion Jessica Dunn – Double Bass Mike Quigley – Drums

GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS (USA) + MATT JOE GOW
May 16 all-day

gg

7pm doors, 8pm show

Over an extensive career Grant-Lee Phillips has earned a reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter – an artist who can deliver lyrical observations with a dry and evocative sense of time and place.

His gift for reconciling classic touchstones with an adventurous sensibility has distinguished his work since he first emerged as the front-man of the acclaimed trio Grant Lee Buffalo in the early ‘90s. At once cinematic in scope and disarmingly intimate, his captivating solo career has explored a variety of modes. Whether it be the electronic inventiveness of Mobilize, acoustic interplay of Virginia Creeper, chamber-pop of Little Moon, meditative solemnity of Walking in the Green Corn, Nashville inspired The Narrows or his latest and most urgent work, Widdershins – Phillips is not one to rest on the accolades of the past. He’s a riveting live performer who thrives onstage. Nevertheless, a new generation have discovered Phillips through his role as the town troubadour on the cult television hit The Gilmore Girls (both in its original run and the 2016 reunion.)

KARISE EDEN + LANE SINCLAIR @ Django: SOLD OUT!!! Thursday Show Selling Fast!
May 18 all-day

Karise7pm doors, Thu 8pm show, Fri 9pm show

After a sellout show in March, Karise Eden returns to Django for two very exclusive up close and personal shows!

Karise Eden’s voice can move a nation! In 2012 she won The Voice with her uniquely soulful renditions of classic songs. She broke records for the most number of singles in the national sales chart and she had the biggest selling album nationally for an Australian artist that year. She followed it up in 2014 with the Gold selling album Things I’ve Done. This summer, Karise Eden steps out of a fresh spell of songwriting to perform her best known songs and a few surprises. This will be a rare show with stripped back, minimal production by arguably Australia’s best female soul vocalist.

Opening the night is Voice contestant, Lane Sinclair!  Born in Canada and raised in heartland NSW, she got her start in music on the streets of Tamworth, often busking and performing at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Now living in Sydney to pursue her music, Lane is still a country girl at heart. Vocally Jeff Buckley, Hiatus Kaiyote, Eva Cassidy and Janis Joplin inspire her.

LUCY WISE + EMPIRE STATE ELEVATORS (DOUBLE ALBUM LAUNCH) @ Django
May 24 all-day

Lucy ESE Pic7pm doors, 8pm show

Lucy Wise has delighted audiences across Australia and internationally with her soulful voice, masterful storytelling, and intricate ukulele and guitar playing. Hailing from Margaret River in Australia’s South West, she grew up performing with ‘The Wise Family Band’ until moving to Melbourne in 2009.

Lucys’ songwriting weaves together traditional folk and pop influences with a strong focus on storytelling which is evident in the release of her two albums and two EPs in the last eight years. A seasoned performer, she has played to packed venues both overseas and at home.

“A wonderfully natural singer and uncommonly gifted writer. Prediction: within this decade Lucy will be a noted songster, worldwide.” – Doug Spencer, ABC Radio National.

www.lucywise.com.au

Empire State Elevators’ beautiful folk melodies imbued with jazz harmony prompt soaring improvisations, taking the listener on a curious journey through an inter-dimensional fantasy.

Carl Pannuzzo began writing music for piano and oboe that could be at once melodic and tangential, inviting the expressive voice and improvisational talents of JJessica Foot and subsequently adding kaleidoscopic double bassist Holly Downes (The String Contingent).

Launching their sonically superb debut ‘the rise and fall of…, the Empire State Elevators are redefining the possibilities of ‘uplifting’ music and it’s well worth stepping in for the ride.

VIVID SYDNEY: DEBORAH CONWAY & WILLY ZYGIER + CLUB HOY (DUO): SOLD OUT!!!
May 26 all-day

Deb Hoy 7pm door, 9pm show

There is not much you can say about the creative output of Deborah Conway & Willy Zygier that hasn’t already been said:

Blessed with an angelic voice, deft at lyrical wordplay and armed with a seemingly inexhaustive melody well, Conway – and partner Zygier – create songs which become best friends for life.
Daily Telegraph

If Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen delivered an album with songs as good as these, the critical response would be rapturous. Conway and Zygier deserve no less.’ Courier Mail

‘Some of the most engaging songs I’ve ever heard from Deborah & Willy. Some of the music makes the little hairs on my neck and arms stand at attention. That doesn’t happen often. ‘
Bill Riner, Network, Music Programmer, ABC Local Radio

At the peak of 1990s grunge two girls with guitars blithely flew in the face of fashion and began performing around Sydney’s inner-city pubs as CLUB HOY. Their twin vocal sound & sweet melodic folk pop songs soon cut a fresh swathe through the fuzz guitar of the indie music scene.

LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL: The ultimate vintage hard rock show @ Django
Jun 1 all-day

metak 1a

7pm doors, 9pm show

Classic is a word too often applied to the mediocre. Too easily posted alongside the drab and dreary. It is a phrase too readily conjured for older rock, regardless of its standing.

But It is a dirty word no more.

Long Live Rock and Roll is a show concocted by journeymen of the genre, through decades of blood, sweat and tears on the road. It is more than a tribute to the Gods of rock’n’roll, it is a flashback to a time when the music was simple, but the songs were great.

Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Toto, The Cult, Chuck Berry and Queen are just a few of the great acts to get reborn in this must-watch show. We’ll say no more, and let the music do the talking.
