BEK-JEAN STEWART & THE SOCIETY FOR THE LOST (ALBUM LAUNCH) + MINDY SOTIRI @ Django
Aug 18 all-day

bek jean crop

7pm doors, 8pm show

Bek-Jean Stewart and The Society for the Lost will be releasing her latest solo album, Songs from the North, which showcases the powerful poetry of her lyrics as well as the vibrancy of her composing and arranging. She will be joined by long-time musical collaborator Grant Shanahan on bass guitar. The band also features Matt Galvin on guitars, Johnny Gauci on keys, and Lawrence Pastro on drums.

Like many of the artists who have inspired her, Bek-Jean uses vivid, haunting melodies to tell stories of loss, love and redemption. The spirited and even jubilant style of her music starkly contrasts with the deeply-felt emotions of her lyrics. Often referred to as desolate or raw, her words nonetheless transport listeners to a place inside the song. Stewart’s songwriting style is usually described as Americana, although her music also has elements of country, folk, and rock.

Mindy Sotiri writes songs that are spun from the mess of every day life.  She has developed a reputation for her unique and honest songwriting, as well as making the drunk women of Marrickville weep. She will be playing tunes from her critically acclaimed fifth album ‘Women Smoking’.

7pm doors, 8pm show

Songs and stories from boats, beaches, bars and a B&B or two… from the Cinque Terre to the Amalfi Coast, 2019

Canzoni, serenate, tarantelle, fiction by Gino Paoli, Ennio Morricone, Frescobaldi, di Capua, de Andre, Tony Renis, Mina, Radiotelevisione Italiana and more… …

It was a small bus rather than a vespa, and the 40 plus degree heatwave in Europe right now didn’t make for the most comfortable travel conditions. But for the whole of July the Piave-Benvenuti clan took on some of Italy’s coastal glories as well as all the major tourist centres (in the height of Italian summer – what were we thinking!) and endured endless midday reruns of Don Matteo and Mina docos… but they lived, deliciously, to tell the tale. Now Nadia wants to sing it for you – suddenly all those songs from Italian summers of long ago make sense.

You more especially ought hear it if you dislike Leonard Cohen: here’s your cure for received notions/ nonsense about Cohen as a byword for gloom! To provide the psychedelic sound Chess sought for these albums, Marshall Chess assembled “the hottest, most avant garde jazz rock guys in Chicago”:Gene Barge, Pete Cosey, Roland Faulkner, Morris Jennings, Louis Satterfield, Charles Stepney and Phil Upchurch.

Today these two albums are massively influential to all forms of contemporary music, from Modern blues to Hip Hop and Electronica.

For this show, Drey Rollan, Howlin Alvarez, Bobbie Green and Moses York are backed by one of the best rhythm sections town featuring Lozz Benson, Scott Leishman and Johnny G. They will play through these two classic albums back to back so get ready for some blues rock Psychedelia Madness!!!

Classic Romanian music, from Canberra. At last something sweet from the Capital!
Super Rats play lautari music, from the gypsy neighbourhoods of dusty old Bucharest. This rich tradition combines many influences: raw Balkan village folk, intricate Gypsy and Turkish music, old central-European restaurant and cafe repertoire, and even jazz. At the centre of the band’s sound is the cimbalom, a giant dulcimer with 145 strings, ably supported by accordion, violin, and double bass.

THE OTHER WOMAN: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF NINA SIMONE
Oct 16 all-day

lisa schouw The Other Woman 1b

7pm doors, 8pm show

★★★★½
“In a voice like dark chocolate, she wrapped vulnerability around a core of steel” (SMH). 60 years after Nina Simone first recorded ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me’ during a mammoth 13-hour recording session, this acclaimed one-woman show returns to Camelot! Written & performed by former Girl Overboard frontwoman Lisa Schouw,

The Other Woman weaves together Simone’s best-loved songs shining a new light on the legendary singer’s celebrated but troubled life. Schouw, together with Musical Director Peter Bailey, lovingly unwraps the layers to reveal Simone’s finest & darkest hours. Arts critic John Shand wrote of the show that Schouw “immediately establishing that she understood there can be no pretending when conjuring up the spirit of Simone. This had to be about baring the truth, as raw, furious & impassioned as that might be. For the full power of Simone’s material to be unlocked, however, Schouw also had to fleck those more feverish emotions with a profound sense of vulnerability, & this she did with such conviction that you felt it in your very marrow.”

Expect to hear classics such as My Baby Just Cares For Me, House of the Rising Sun, I Loves You Porgy & Four Women. And expect to come away from The Other Woman knowing & feeling things about Simone that you may never have known or felt before.

LUCIE THORNE launches KITTY & FRANK
Oct 17 all-day

lucie a0708505068_10 crop7pm door, 8pm show

Painting landscapes with dream-soaked synths, irresistible beats, poetry and pathos, Lucie Thorne presents her extraordinary new art/pop concept album Kitty & Frank. With Kitty & Frank, Thorne traces the wild true stories of young frontier woman Kitty Walsh and her lover, the charismatic bandit Frank Gardiner. In the 1860’s Gold Fever came to Wheogo NSW and like Deadwood, it didn’t end well. Inhabiting a sonic world that calls to mind a meeting of David Bowie’s Blackstar and Kate Bush’s Ariel, via Grimes and Alice Coltrane, Kitty & Frank spans a tale of Shakespearean proportions. All this at the hands of one of Australia’s finest song-poets who has ventured to triumphant new ground with staggering certitude.

Lucie is touring far and wide throughout the spring to celebrate the album’s release – and for the Sydney show she’ll be joined by stellar bandmates Hamish Stuart (drums), Matt McMahon (keys) and Alice Williams (bass & harmonies).
“Vast and often breathtaking… these songs glow in the smoke of Thorne’s incredibly expressive voice” (Michael Dwyer, The Age)

ICONS OF SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC: JOHNNY CLEGG & MIRIAM MAKEBA
Oct 18 all-day

miriam-johnny-1_v1000

7pm doors, 9pm show

Chris Gudu has toured and shared the stage with some of Africa’s greatest legends such as Hugh Masekela, Angelique Kidjo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo & more. For this very special night, The Chris Gudu Band will be joined by special guests Khaliphani & Tarisai Vushe to pay tribute to Johnny Clegg & Miriam Makeba. Providing the backing vocals will be a trio of Ngaire, Thandi & Nazra. The show will be jam packed with irresistible umbaqanga / township jive music & lots of dancing as they celebrate these 2 legends & their legacy.

To say South Africa has a rich heritage of music is an understatement, producing countless international icons such as Mahotela Queens, Hugh Masekela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Stimela, Soul Brother, Soweto Gospel Choir, to name but a few. In recent times many of us have been left broken-hearted at the passing of one such legend – a true ambassador of township jive & kwela music straight from the streets of Soweto. Johnny Clegg, a much celebrated pioneer & an unparalleled exponent of South African rhythms sadly passed away on 16 July 2019 after a long illness. He has left the world a priceless gift of his music well documented on his recordings.

Long before the legendary Johnny Clegg made his presence felt in the music scene internationally the township jive & kwela (umbaqanga) music of South Africa was already well known, celebrated, danced to & sung along to across all the four corners of the globe. It is the true heroes of the music from that part of the continent who paved the way for superstars like Clegg & many others ahead of their time. Among those heroes was none other than Miriam Makeba, the mother of African Music, better known to her fans as Mama Africa. She passed away on 9 November 2008 leaving a musical vacuum that only she could fill.

A Night Of Gypsy Swing with TINEL DRAGOI & JOSEPH ZARB + THE CAMERON JONES TRIO feat. ASAHI TAKAHASHI @ Django
Oct 31 all-day

unnamed (2)7pm doors, 8pm show

Join us for a night of Gypsy and Gypsy Swing music at Django At Camelot. A concert full of l’amour de la vie and musical virtuosity featuring Joseph Zarb (Marsala) performing in a stunning duo setting with master of authentic gypsy violin Tinel Dragoi, plus the Cameron Jones Trio.

For Gypsies, music is religion and music comes from faith and from the soul. So whether we are in Paris or Bucharest, playing Swing or Bolero. The soul of the music tastes the same. Tinel Dragoi is from Romania; Rom Gypsy Father, Romanian Jewish Mother. Violin was his only option in life. Jose lives his professional life on the streets of Sydney, Gypsy Style, playing on every street corner. The combination is like an electrical storm in the Bohemian Mountains.

Cameron Jones (Spyglass Gypsies, Gadjo Guitars) is musician who draws inspiration from the driving rhythms and melodic honesty of the acoustic gypsy jazz guitar. In 2018 Jones recorded The Waterfall Way, his first album under his name, an album that draws repertoire and inspiration from his travels to France and The Netherlands. Journeys to the very heart and soul of the gypsy jazz music.

“It was several years ago when I first saw and heard Cameron Jones play guitar with the superb Gypsy Swing group ‘Spyglass Gypsies”. I remember being most impressed with his understanding and execution of the Gypsy Swing style. Since then I’ve not only had the pleasure of watching him grow in stature both as a player and composer, but also of jamming with him at the OzManouche Festival.” Hank B Marvin

THE CLAPTON UNPLUGGED SHOW

Eric.jpg7pm door, 8pm show

Relive the most popular Unplugged Concert of all time. 26 million copies sold. 6 Grammy Awards.

Immerse yourself in Inspired guitar playing, soulful vocals, stories & Outstanding Musicianship.

Eric Clapton’s career has spanned over 6 decades. Lauded as being the greatest guitarist of all time, his roots are firmly embedded in the blues tradition of which he remains both a student & visionary. In his unforgettable ‘Unplugged’ Concert, the music was minimalist, alternating between reworked major hits such as ‘Layla’, the traditional blues of Robert Johnson & Bo Diddley, and new songs , including ‘Tears in Heaven’, that were an outpouring & expression of a very difficult period of his life.

It was honest, real, fun, at times raw, & very very special!

Like many guitarists the world over, Mark Shelley was inspired by Eric Clapton . “the way he makes that guitar speak from his heart & soul, ….as a young man, well it just blew me away & I wanted so badly to be able to do the same. I enjoy playing this show so much, it is such a privilege to do so”

Mark is joined by his band – Australia’s finest musicians whose credits include – Tommy Emmanuel, Moving Pictures, Dragon, and Marcia Hines to name a few.

Picking up the instrument at age four, Lloyd played his first professional show at age ten and was touring the east coast of Australia at 12. By 16 he was on tour in the United States, cutting his teeth as a true travelling blues man. Lloyd’s travels not only honed his craft, earned him a swag of awards and brought him to take counsel with the founding fathers of modern blues – it taught him the most important part of being a blues musician: connecting with everyday people.

Lloyd has toured extensively throughout Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan, viewing himself as a social worker more than anything else – someone to help people forget about their worries for a few hours and put a smile on their face.

THE PRAGMATICS: A VERY PRAGMATIC NEW YEARS EVE @ Django (SOLD OUT!)
Dec 31 all-day

Pragmatics8pm doors

Rounding out their fifth year of raucous classic rock, soul and delicious surprises, The Pragmatics invite you to share with them that holiest of party nights, NYE, at the intimate and magnificent Django Bar, in sun-soaked Marrickville.

Joined by a selection of special guests, including The Brassmatics horn section, The Prags will deliver three swinging sets of ragged glory, til well past midnight.

The Prags have sold out every Camelot show (!) to a devoted throng who are on their feet with hands in the air thanks to a unique selection of shout-out-loud anthems and deep cut discoveries. Here’s why…

Imagine a band that grooves through Motown: The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. Then, like a Queenslander on Bundy, gets punchy with Bowie, Queen, Accadacca, The Jam and Thin Lizzy. Or, with morning-after regret, sings harmony-laden tracks from The Band, Bee Gees, Beatles, Joe Cocker, Fleetwood Mac and Rod Stewart. And then, with a fresh application of lippy and a scrunchy, combines 80s classics from Dexy’s Midnight Runners, INXS, Simple Minds, Style Council, Tears for Fears, Johnny Cougar, Bryan Adams, Billy Bragg and more! With horns!

You’re right, it doesn’t make sense! Where is the logic? The through-line! The principles!

Whatever. This is Pragmatic. We’re gonna have a party.

Get in early to avoid disappointment.

Curtis Eller is a banjo player, songwriter and rock & roll singer. Eller is a gifted and prolific songwriter who’s banjo-driven songs describe a dreamlike vision of American history where all points in time have collapsed into one. The band is thrilled to announce the release of their latest and most ambitious full-length album, A Poison Melody, on which they have augmented their indelicate, rock & roll rhythms with a tempestuous cloud of horns and a graceless choir of backsliders in their quest to bring Eller’s historically evocative compositions to vivid, cinematic life.

Melding the earthiness of folk, dexterity of jazz and the craft of classical, Chaika’s vast influences create superb genre-blending music that transcends labels. “Like a gust of wind ushering in a new season of possibilities … Arrow, as the title suggests, offered listeners a new direction in Australian Folk music, an innovative blend of beautifully crafted pieces.” (What’s on Sydney)

DAVE WARNER’S FROM THE SUBURBS: MUGS GAME ANNIVERSARY TOUR
Jan 1 all-day

David parker Suburbs 1978 001 (2) 7pm doors, 8pm show

Released at the end of 1978, Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs album Mugs Game was the definitive Australian album of the era, striking such a chord with the ignored kids of Australia’s suburbs, that it rocketed up the charts and went gold within three months.

Around this time on his Rolling Thunder Tour, Bob Dylan declared Dave Warner, along with Richard Clapton, as his favourite Australian artist. But a year and one album later, tired of life on the road and looking for new challenges, that Suburbs line-up split.

Now, with the exception of Johnny who died in 2005, all the members of the band who recorded Mugs Game are heading back on the road for a short reunion tour. There will also be a vinyl re-issue of the original album with an extra album of early, unreleased material from 1976 and 1977.

After all, forty years on not that much has changed – it is still … a Mugs Game.

She has experienced life from the back of a van, used beachside showers to shave her legs, lived and performed in European mansions, and at times hidden away like a hermit to regroup, reinspire and discover Love. So listen, as her songs tell the tales of life, love and the road.

With her art for words and an open, and at times awkward, honesty Laura’s song writing will make you laugh, smile, and maybe even cry.

You are cordially invited to celebrate the lives of two fictional characters – The Sandman & Flacco 1994 – 2011, late of Triple J, Good News Week and SBS. Words cannot express their loss of life, laughter and basic income. They left no offspring, no will and no forwarding address. Together we can all suck the remaining life out of their tepid corpses. The characters are survived by the skin of their teeth, elevated toilet seats and the aged pension.

THE SPOOKY MEN’S CHORALE
Jan 1 all-day

spookies 1a7pm doors, 8pm show

Spooky Men’s Chorale come back to Camelot!

Everybody’s favourite choir – in fact hands down the most entertaining choir Australia has ever seen! Hilarious, moving, a truly incredible experience!

All around Australia, excitement is mounting: society women are slightly breathless, small children and dogs are yapping at nothing, and real estate salesmen are vaguely anxious. Supplies of grandiose hatwear, beard grooming equipment and pigfat are running low.

The Spookies’ sound – warm and grainy as a slab of teak – and their humorous style – deadpan, sly, and always unexpected – find new and wonderful avenues of expression on “The Spooky Man in History”.

“This is surely the best a capella act in the land” John Shand, SMH

“While superficially a comedy act, the Spooky Men are also fine close harmony singers, their tuning, timing and dynamics impeccable.” The Independent (London)

LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL: The ultimate vintage hard rock show @ Django
Jan 10 all-day

metak 1a

7pm doors, 9pm show

Classic is a word too often applied to the mediocre. Too easily posted alongside the drab and dreary. It is a phrase too readily conjured for older rock, regardless of its standing.

But It is a dirty word no more.

Long Live Rock and Roll is a show concocted by journeymen of the genre, through decades of blood, sweat and tears on the road. It is more than a tribute to the Gods of rock’n’roll, it is a flashback to a time when the music was simple, but the songs were great.

Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Toto, The Cult, Chuck Berry and Queen are just a few of the great acts to get reborn in this must-watch show. We’ll say no more, and let the music do the talking.

TÉTÉ (France) + LIZ MARTIN @ Django
Jan 16 all-day

tete7pm doors, 8pm show

French pop folk superstar Tété is returning to Australia for the first time in 7 years to celebrate the release of his seventh, and latest album ‘Fauthentique’. Be it fake news, conspiracy theories or lies from public figures, the news keeps reminding us that these distortions of reality are now part of our daily life.

Tété’s new album comes as a reverse question to this unforeseen present: “How can one be sure about one’s perception?” Hence the “Fauthentique” concept, the expression being French for “falsely authentic”. The recording comes across as a sort of melodic make-believe odyssey, built upon organic programming. Falsely naive. Falsely acoustic. Fauthentique.

Tété is very excited to be returning to Australia to share these 12 new songs from “Fauthentique”, along with classic tunes from across his career.

Atmospheric, passionate, brooding, melodic, at times downright swaggeringly cool, and full of a mesmerising and captivating musical and lyrical diversity, Liz Martin is a powerful and distinctive Australian music talent. ‘Evocative, alluring and strangely comforting’ – Tim Ritchie, ABC RN ‘From play one, I felt an instant connection and obviously I was not alone. Every spin on FBi provoked listener response, which I can assure is not the norm’ – Stephen Ferris FBi
