BIG MERINO (SINGLE & VIDEO LAUNCH) @ Django
Dec 2 all-day

big merino7pm doors, 8pm show

Big Merino is a genre-blending, vocal harmony-driven band featuring Stuart Davis (lead vocals/guitar), Alex Craig (lead guitar), Peter Richardson (bass) and Colin Sevitt (drums).

Their songs blur the lines between rock, country, blues, soul and funk – occasionally making forays into lesser known styles such as New Orleans 2nd Line and Rumba.

Lead singer Stuart Davis cut his teeth singing Trad Black Gospel with Tony Backhouse in The Heavenly Light Quartet, and brings that soulful feel to everything he does.

Citing some of their influences as Glen Hansard, Jackson Browne and The Rolling Stones, co-songwriters Craig and Davis write socially and politically-charged songs, often in a specifically Australian context, that are sometimes gentle and nostalgic and at other times nothing less than a fierce cry for revolution.

Suzy And the Snakepit pay tribute to the Motown tunes that everywhere, around the world, get people dancing in the street in what will be one of the best New Years Eve Parties in town!

In the 1960s in Detroit, Motown found the perfect formula for pop: catchy, clever songwriting, great singers, and deeply danceable grooves. The musicians that Berry Gordy assembled in Motown’s studio, the Snakepit, also had an enormous influence on rock & roll – Motown tunes have been covered by everyone from The Rolling Stones to The Jam to Motorhead.

Suzy And The Snakepit play a set that revolves around the best of Hitsville USA, from the effervescent hits that you’d have to be a grouch not to love, like Stevie Wonder’s ‘Signed Sealed Delivered’ or The Temptations’ ‘Ain’t Too Proud To Beg’ but also includes some treasured deep cuts from the era. Based around the soulful vocals of Suzy G, and featuring a crack backing band including musicians who’ve played with Sydney indie bands like Pel Mel, Perry Keyes, Fallon Cush, Lazy Susan, and Eva Trout, Suzy And The Snakepit will play hit after hit that will keep you ready for a brand new beat. LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL: The ultimate vintage hard rock show @ Django
Jan 1 all-day

metak 1a

7pm doors, 9pm show

Classic is a word too often applied to the mediocre. Too easily posted alongside the drab and dreary. It is a phrase too readily conjured for older rock, regardless of its standing.

But It is a dirty word no more.

Long Live Rock and Roll is a show concocted by journeymen of the genre, through decades of blood, sweat and tears on the road. It is more than a tribute to the Gods of rock’n’roll, it is a flashback to a time when the music was simple, but the songs were great.

Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Toto, The Cult, Chuck Berry and Queen are just a few of the great acts to get reborn in this must-watch show. We’ll say no more, and let the music do the talking.

LUKE HEGGIE: HAVE THAT @ Django
Jan 1 all-day

Luke Heggie_ Tom Wilkinson-62

1st show 6pm doors, 7pm show | 2nd show 8:15pm doors, 8:45pm show

Luke Heggie threatened to quit stand up comedy, but after everyone he told of his plans cried inconsolably and clung to his ankles as he walked away, he decided that the world needs laughter. So he’s back with another harsh but fair show about dickheads.

If you own a circular beach towel and/or a set of square dinner plates, you do the reach-around at buffets to get an empty plate before you’re in front of the food, you’re one of those deluded losers who’s friends with all his ex-girlfriends, you wear a t-shirt with the word “finisher” on it, you were the one responsible for hot nuts not being available in pubs anymore, you’re neither a mechanic nor a toddler and yet you wear overalls, then this is not the show for you.

This show will be filmed but will largely be the backs of your heads. It’s not about you. However, there may be fleeting shots of the crowd coming in or leaving or whatever. If you are on the run for some dodgy shit, wear a disguise or move to Darwin. That is all.

No lowbreeds please.

THE OTHER WOMAN: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF NINA SIMONE

7pm doors, 8pm show

★★★★½

“For the full power of Simone’s material to be unlocked Schouw had to fleck those more feverish emotions with a profound sense of vulnerability, and this she did with such conviction that you felt it in your very marrow.” John Shand

“In a voice like dark chocolate, she wrapped vulnerability around a core of steel, her performance culminating in the bitterness, resilience and tragedy of the title song.”                                      Sydney Morning Herald

Sixty years after Nina Simone first recorded ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me’ during a mammoth 13-hour recording session at New York’s Bethlehem records, the acclaimed one-woman show ‘The Other Woman – The Life and Music of Nina Simone’ returns to Sydney’s Camelot Lounge.

Written and performed by former Girl Overboard frontwoman Lisa Schouw, The Other Woman weaves together Simone’s best-loved songs shining a new light on the legendary singer’s celebrated but troubled life. Schouw, together with Musical Director Peter Bailey, lovingly unwraps the layers to reveal Simone’s finest and darkest hours.

Arts critic John Shand wrote of the show that Schouw “immediately establishing that she understood there can be no pretending when conjuring up the spirit of Simone. This had to be about baring the truth, as raw, furious and impassioned as that might be. For the full power of Simone’s material to be unlocked, however, Schouw also had to fleck those more feverish emotions with a profound sense of vulnerability, and this she did with such conviction that you felt it in your very marrow.”

Expect to hear classics such as My Baby Just Cares For Me, House of the Rising Sun, I Loves You Porgy and Four Women. And expect to come away from The Other Woman knowing and feeling things about Simone that you may never have known or felt before.

CALLUM WYLIE EP LAUNCH + JACK RAYNE @ Django
Feb 10 all-day

callum7pm doors, 8pm show

Callum Wylie has spent the last couple of years playing shows across Sydney and up and down the East coast of Australia. After a successful tour supporting the critically acclaimed Ahern Brothers, he buckled down and returned to some previously recorded songs to finish them for his second release. Working on the Central Coast with Andrew Beck at Riversong Studios, Callum Wylie was able to craft a four track EP, that is a step up from his debut Tomorrows Sun. In an effort to capture the warmth of his Americana sound, the EP was simply produced with a focus on live takes and acoustic guitar sounds with minimal intervention. The result is an honest depiction of the songs recorded, showing growth between releases. He will be launching his new EP Listen at Django Bar on February 10th.

With shades of yesteryear, and passion only a 6 foot tall ginger can possess, storyteller Jack Rayne depicts the mountainous highs and heartbreaking lows of the day by day in the most beautiful of ways. Boasting one of the most captivating voices on the Australian east coast, the Sydney-sider has graced audiences nation wide with his authentically raw live show. Rayne combines the traditional rustic nature of roots/Americana music with a unique vocal flair, creating a sound that is all his own.

Amira

7pm doors, 8pm

Amira Medunjanin is a renowned performer of “Sevdalinke”, which is the name for Bosnian love songs. This year she is touring Australia alongside guitarist Ante Gelo and will be showcasing their unique style.

The sevdalinke (sevdah songs) she learned from her mother were the most beautiful of songs. Her fascination with the oral tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina led her to devote herself to creating a unique voice within sevdah to explore its expressive capacity to the full. She had spent years searching in vain for to find people who shared her ideas about sevdah, and for the best way to present it.

Dubbed “Bosnia’s Billie Holiday” by music journalist and author Garth Cartwright, the comparison reflects the way in which Amira turns sevdah inside out, finding new contexts and forms within a tradition that is hundreds of years old.

Steve Balbi - Photo by Vincent Stone7pm doors, 9pm show

By popular demand, Steve Balbi strides to the crease and takes guard for the first time in 2019, at Camelot Lounge on Friday 15 March!

The year 2018 was momentous for composer, performer and producer, Steve Balbi, for so many reasons. In April he recorded the single ‘Winners’ with Jessica Irwin, which was a world first release using Psykinetic’s ground breaking eye-control music software, Atmosphere.

Three months later, Balbi composed and produced the new Fox Test Cricket Theme. Orchestrated by George Ellis and recorded with members from the Sydney Symphony, this new theme promises to become profoundly entrenched within the Australian consciousness throughout the 2018/19 summer, just as Channel Nine Test Cricket theme has been an iconic symbol of the Australian summer for the past 40 years.

Of course, on October 26, casting a renewed focus upon the notion humanity, in riff and verse, he released his first single in more than three years, ‘Modern Love’, which debuted at #3 on the iTunes Rock Chart.

Having secured a support spot with Midnight Oil at the Bid Red Bash in Birdsville in July, the tone ‘n’ rhythm has been set for an equally remarkable 2019. Balbi’s last trip to Camelot sold out. So don’t miss out this time ‘round, as the creative chameleon mines a kaleidoscope of life at the margins, transcending rock and pop while coalescing sentimentality and soul at Camelot Lounge on Friday 15 March, 2019.

Born with music flowing through her veins, GIA is a passionate, young emerging artist and multi – instrumentalist from Sydney, Australia.

KAREN LEE ANDREWS + JAY POWER
Mar 17 all-day

KLA7pm doors, 8pm show

Karen Lee Andrews (formerly Ms Murphy) has reconnected with her guitar, hitting new strides and a new style, which can only be described as Oceanic Blues. And now this proud Polynesian woman of soul is back with her own original music and new EP. Her sound is an exceptional blend of American Blues and Soul. The roots of the sound are gritty guitar, glowing valves, lush tremolo and deep reverb in a distinctively fluid Oceanic expression. This commanding woman of soul is back and the depths of her voice unlimited. She is fast becoming a festival favourite, but on Sun 17th March she will be at the Camelot Lounge with her world class band – Adam Ventoura on bass and Yanya Boston on drums.

“One of the most original and dignified talents to emerge in Australian Entertainment in a long time. She manages to be both imperial yet vulnerable.”
Paul Sheehan, Sydney Morning Herald

The name ‘Power’ describes her work perfectly. Driven by hip-hop inspired beats, straight up lyrics and a big voice. Rhythm is where Jay is most comfortable, layering melodies over beats your body won’t want to ignore. Her love for lush vocals shows in her arrangements, filled with the harmonies and beauty that comes from an artist who lives to sing. She is joined by experienced RnB guitarist, Mikey Chan. Chan has lent his formidable talent to heavyweights like Grammy award-winning Hip-Hop producer M-Phazes, Roots Manuva and Kimbra.

“Jay Power is just the right blend of sass and soul. She’s definitely got substance.”

TWILIGHT ON THE TRAIL with JEN MIZE & MARK SHOLTEZ + SMITH & JONES @ Django
Mar 17 all-day

twilight7pm doors, 8pm show

Join award-winning recording artists Mark Sholtez and Jen Mize, along with their all-star band in the intimate surroundings of the Django Bar, as they pay tribute to the great cowboy crooners, including Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and Dale Evans.

Twilight on the Trail will lead you on a journey through the dusty canyons, in an evening of iconic cowboy songs from the golden era of American popular music.

Jen Mize grew up in a ranch house in the heart of the Mojave Desert with dreams of being a rodeo queen. A descendant of the Native American Lumbee people, for Jen the stories captured in these old cowboy songs often run parallel to her own story and her childhood experiences exploring the rugged terrain of the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains.

Sholtez however has a vastly different connection to this music. He came to know the old west through a Hollywood lens, and in the form of the singing cowboy. Ultimately, it was Sholtez’s ongoing fascination with these lonesome cowboy chronicles, underscored by a perfect Hollywood soundtrack that inspired the recording of Twilight on the Trail. The late-night call of the cowboy crooner was not all that different from the sounds emerging from the big city jazz clubs of the time, making it an ideal musical meeting place for this collaboration.

Opening the night is Smith & Jones.

KATE WADEY ALBUM LAUNCH
Mar 28 all-day

Kate Wadey7pm doors, 8pm show

Kate Wadey is back at Camelot after a SOLD OUT performance last year!

Here to release her 2nd album ‘Moon Song.’ An album of beautiful Jazz Standards with unique arrangements.
Kate effortlessly explores and interprets jazz classics with a charm and sophistication that appear to come from another time and place. Kate has a gorgeously rich and warm voice, coupled with a vocal range, sophistication and innate swing that bely her youth. Imbued with emotion, yet technically masterful, these interpretations are destined to hold their own among the greats. The overwhelming response to this release and to Kate’s live appearances are cementing her place among the young musicians to be noticed in Sydney today.

Kate began singing in gospel choirs and jazz vocal ensembles as a 13 year old in Adelaide. She moved to Sydney and immediately made waves in the notoriously difficult to crack Sydney live scene as a backing singer, studio vocalist, pop vocalist, soul and Motown singer.

Recently however, she has found her way back to her jazz roots and she’s making people sit up and take notice. Kate regularly sings live and records with the cream of Australia’s current crop of extraordinary jazz musicians and composers and has rapidly gathered praise and new fans.

Original compositions, instrumental virtuosity, precious rhythmic blends and refined arrangements make up the stylistic element of the group that with its light and cheerful music has enchanted the audiences of the most important folk and world festivals.

Instigator of the rediscovery of the diatonic accordion, Riccardo Tesi revolutionised the image and vocabulary of this popular instrument by forcing the narrow boundaries of ethnic music to be included in the jazz and singer-songwriting field.

REECE MASTIN + JAMES VAN COOPER
Apr 25 all-day

reece

7pm doors, 8pm

Reece Mastin’s show is not one you would expect from a 90’s baby. It’s rock ‘n’ roll straight out of a time capsule – and that by no means is an understatement. Call it what you will, reincarnation, spiritual inspiration, naivety or carelessness to what is “main stream” or “cool”, this show and this sound, is cemented in pure love and passion for rock ’n’ roll, and finding true identity through music.

Since separating himself from the large corporate labels, Mastin has produced three powerful rock records, “Rebel and the Reason”, “ Change Colours” and most recently, “Suitcase Of Stories” – and you can see and feel as clear as a cloudless day, that this is what he was born to do.

If you’re looking for some new music and something more than a passing fancy, take a trip down to Reece’s world, and stay along for the ride. We are all sure hoping for a long journey to come.

James Van Cooper has  developed into an Australian Americana/Country Guitar Rock performer, his sound dedicated to the stylings of cool country hipsters Jason Isbell and Ryan Adams. James is also a gifted guitarist – his playing leaves you in smoking ruins and his songwriting is beyond tweet-sized pop nonsense.  When James isn’t doing his own this he is the guitarist for Mi Sex and Glenn Shorrock.

A NIGHT OF CREAM & HENDRIX @ Django
May 4 all-day

cream hendrix7pm doors, 9pm show

Join Drey Rollan and crew for a musical experience that cuts right to the heart of where psychedelic blues-rock guitar began. Life in London was bustling in the swinging 60’s, with the explosion of the British invasion hitting the world over.

Whilst the Beatles were conquering America, there was another sound commanding attention, three dynamic musicians from the London Blues and Jazz scene would form the first power trio called Cream. Featuring Eric Clapton a guitar god, Bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker, this super group would create the Blues Rock genre. Together Cream crafted four incredible albums within a two year a period. Hits such as I feel free, sunshine of your love, White Room and Crossroads.

This sound became iconic when the most talked about guitarist of all time Jimi Hendrix came on to the scene taking the sound to supernatural heights. The American landed in London formed the Jimi Hendrix experience with bassist Noel Redding and Drummer Mitch Mitchell. This would be a power group with another short career due to Jimi’s tragic death in 1970. In the space of two years this power trio created three massive albums, with monster hits like Hey Joe, purple Haze, Foxy Lady and Voodoo Child.

The Cream and Hendrix Tribute show has melded together some of the Cream and Hendrix classics, to transport you back to where music became colours that lit up the room.

Featuring: Drey Rollan on Guitar; Scott Leishman on Bass; Craig Whitaker on Drums; and special vocalists Akira Alvarez, Bobbie Green & Moses York!

ROB SNARSKI ALBUM LAUNCH (THE BLACKEYED SUSANS) w/SHANE O’MARA + AMANDA BROWN
May 10 all-day

ROB 20197pm doors, 9pm show

Since the release of Snarski’s acclaimed debut solo album “Wounded Bird” there’s been an album of cover songs (by request | recorded on an iphone)~ “Low Fidelity”, then the return to his beloved band The Blackeyed Susans for the album “Close Your Eyes and See” …and in-between a set of short whimsical, music and family related tales within his sweet memoir “You’re Not Rob Snarski ~ Crumbs from the Cake”.

So it makes perfect sense “Sparrow & Swan” (his second solo album) sees a gravitational pull towards the narrative, a change in direction and the song writing process. Conversation turns into song, late night tales become tunes ~ there are stories here from Brisbane cab drivers, girls from Belfast ‘74 in search of Van Morrison, football players and their protégés, relationships sparked in TABs, sightings of Robert Mitchum at Mitcham Station, a sailor in search of Helsinki …and the weather ~ there’s always the weather, the extremities ~ the sun burning a hole in the sky or snow falling upon ancient ice …and birds, what’s with the birds?

The musical palette lies somewhere between Havana and Helsinki ~ think a Cuban cigar with a licorice ice cream.

Amanda Brown [soundtrack composer, violinist, singer and Go-Between] will be opening the show.

VIVID SYDNEY: LOBSTERMAN @ Django
Jun 7 all-day

sgt lobster7pm doors, 9pm show

Lobsterman is one of the great cult artists of our time. Labouring away in obscurity in Sydney (northern beaches – inner west – northern beaches) since the mid-1980s, Chris Lobb’s finely crafted vignettes reflect upon life’s seeming insignificant elements, to sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant effect. He commands a devoted following in Sydney and, curiously, Tasmania. China Pig Records is collating some of the most intriguing tracks from 100+ releases for the Lobsterman Archives series. The show is to launch Volume 3, which brings us up to the year 2000, give or take.

ThIS showcase for Vivid Sydney on Friday 7 June brings musicians together from around the country to reform Lobster’s 1990s bands Unseen and the original Lobsterman band in a one-off celebration not to be missed. Recommended for fans of Captain Beefheart, The Fall and Laughing Clowns. Join us to celebrate a living legend!

VIVID SYDNEY: LEE COULTER & DIXIE MAXWELL (USA) @ Django
Jun 9 all-day

lee7pm doors, 9pm show

When you start something new, you don’t expect success at first attempt. But when unsigned singer-songwriters Lee Coulter & Dixie Maxwell teamed up for the first time, their single “We You Me” shot to the top of the itunes singles chart in Australia and New Zealand.

It was no accident. “Overnight success” doesn’t apply when there are decades of paying dues between the two of them. As two seasoned singer songwriters – Coulter originally from Brisbane, Australia and Maxwell from San Diego, CA (with a year stint in the Nashville scene) – they have quietly honed their crafts in the background of cafes, bars and restaurants across the USA.

Together, their sound is exponential. It’s like modern indie-folk meets a classic movie. Encouraged by this fact, the success of their first single and a Kickstarter that reached their goal in just 2 days, they have now teamed up for a full duo album as “Lee Coulter & Dixie Maxwell,” to be released in late May this year, and will be touring Australia to play both solo and duo sets for their new fans down under.

LUCIE THORNE & HAMISH STUART (Single Launch) + ALICE PEARL WILLIAMS
Jun 23 all-day

LucieT7pm doors, 8pm show

Wheogo Hill is the first song to be released from Lucie Thorne’s extraordinary new art/pop concept album Kitty & Frank. To celebrate the song’s release, Lucie Thorne is playing a select run of intimate shows throughout June, in duet with legendary drummer and her long-time collaborator Hamish Stuart.

Painting landscapes with dream-soaked synths, irresistible beats, poetry and pathos, with Kitty & Frank Thorne has woven an astonishing arc of vignettes to create songs which are at once timeless and utterly modern. Inhabiting a sonic world that calls to mind a meeting of David Bowie’s Blackstar and Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, via Grimes and Alice Coltrane – Kitty & Frank tells a tale of Shakespearean proportions. All this at the hands of one of Australia’s finest song-poets who has ventured to triumphant new ground with staggering certitude.

“Thorne conjures a simple narrative flow that, like a Raymond Carver story, transforms everyday life into high art” (The Canberra Times)

Originally from Melbourne, Alice Pearl Williams (Early Nights, Liz Stringer’s Australian touring band) is now based in Sydney and is stepping back in to the spotlight to join her long-time friend Lucie Thorne for her upcoming shows. Eclectic, lyrical and wry, Alice’s songwriting recalls the quirkiness of Suzanne Vega and melodic urgency of Kate Bush, all while maintaining a unique storytelling style of her own.
