Mar 3 all-day

james taylor 1a7pm doors, 9pm show

A Tapestry of Fire and Rain is a genuinely moving, nostalgic concert performance – the music and legacy of Carole King and James Taylor. Two long-time friends (of more than 40 years) and collaborators, prominent Jazz singer Di Bird and Peter O’Regan capture the essence of friendship through music with their dynamic performances. They are joined in this venture by the master of guitar Steve Brien as Musical Director and Max Alduca on double bass.

Both artists have frequently been stylistically compared to Carole King and James Taylor. Now, with the same amazing onstage chemistry as those superstars, they take their audiences back in time with favourites like “How Sweet It Is,” “Carolina in My Mind,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and of course, the incomparable, “You’ve Got a Friend.” For lovers of Carole King and James Taylor this show is a must!

CLUB HOY (Trio) + CARUS THOMPSON @ Django (SOLD OUT!!!)
Mar 8 all-day

club hoy carus 1a7pm doors, 8pm show

Don’t miss this very special double bill from two wonderful acoustic acts:

CLUB HOY (trio)

At the peak of 1990s grunge two girls with guitars blithely flew in the face of fashion and began performing around Sydney’s inner-city pubs as Club Hoy. Their twin vocal sound and sweet melodic folk pop songs soon cut a fresh swathe through the fuzz guitar of the indie music scene.

In 1993, Penny Flanagan and Julia Richardson decided to go their separate ways and pursue individual music careers.

20 years on, the girls have come together again with the purest objective: to play old songs and enjoy each others company. No record business, no pressure, just the joy of music and shared memories. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see them perform in trio mode.

CARUS THOMPSON

Globe trotting troubadour Carus Thompson has done it the hard way. Independent, with no commercial radio play, self-managed and funded he’s toured the world alongside The John Butler Trio, The Waifs, Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson & Pete Murray, selling over 30,000 albums along the way.

He’s won his loyal fan base through 20 years of hitting the road, one punter, one gig, one tour at a time, always delivering passionate, energetic, folk-rocking shows that entertain and engage.

This is the third and final tour for his lauded ISLAND album, before he takes a break to start writing for album number seven. Don’t miss one of this countries finest pub-rock acoustic singer-songwriters.

Serving up a heavenly cocktail of African music – catchy, soulful, energetic & powerful. This live show is a feast for the senses – bright traditional African costumes & irresistibly danceable songs. The evening will be hosted by Pape Mbaye – the acclaimed multi-instrumental percussionist, playing Djembe, Sabar, Balafon & Guitar. His beaming smile is as well loved as his wide musical talents. It’s an infectious smile that seems to go hand-in-hand with the West African rhythms that lie at the root of his music.

Pape Mbaye will bring the the magic of West Africa to his audience – infused with Latin, reggae and jazz, inspired & led by this uncontainable master percussionist. Captivating and hypnotic, these are the sounds of a culture steeped in magic, ritual and a strong spirituality. They’re the sounds that bring people together, that celebrate, commemorate and rejoice a world of music from jazz to R’n’B to pop. And they’re the sounds that Pape has made since childhood.

JESS SPAHR (SINGLE LAUNCH) + RITA B + JACKSON CARROL @ Django
Apr 19 all-day

jess s7pm doors, 8pm show

With a sold out show under her belt, Sydney dreamy-pop musician, Jess Spahr is set to launch her new single, Betray Me, at Django!

A sonic seduction of ethereal vocals, meditative piano and laid-back reverb, Jess Spahr creates a definitive contrast with lyrics that dance on darker themes of betrayal and deception. Likened to Morcheeba, London Grammar and Evanescence, Jess inspires confidence with her contemporary dreamy pop music and a show that engages, uplifts and entertains with her band and disarming banter.

Rita B is a Sydney-based Alt Folk artist. She’s raw and honest and makes music to build strength in a conflicting society. Her music is unfiltered, uncorrupted and totally unapologetic. Currently focusing on carving her name beyond Sydney’s live music and recording scene, Rita B also cuts a mesmerising presence on stage and her one of a kind voice has to be heard to be believed.

May 4 all-day

DRAGON 24A

7pm doors, 9pm show

Dragon are back, fronted by the legendary kiwi singer Mark Williams. This version of Dragon rocks its way through a long list of iconic songs that are part of the national estate.

Bass player, Todd Hunter has reformed the band after a much needed break of 10 years. Todd and Mark are joined by Canadian guitar slinger, Bruce Reid and drum wizard Pete Drummond.

The band is known for anthems like April Sun In Cuba, Are You Old Enough, Rain, Speak No Evil, Young Years, This Time, Sunshine, Celebrate and Dreams of Ordinary Men. Todd and Marc Hunter started the band in 1973 and Dragon sold over 2 million records over 30 years.

The current live show evolves from an intimate acoustic beginning to a spirited, electric, crowd rousing finale. Mark Williams sings each song in a way that is familiar to the audience but completely his own and strong playing and sublime vocal harmonies have the crowd singing along as if everyone on the room is in the band. Dragon manages to reframe 30 years of Australian musical history into one coherent picture and do justice to a great collection of timeless songs.

CHASING THE MOON @ Django
May 6 all-day

Chasing-the-Moon-2a

7pm doors, 8pm show

“like walking through a music festival in an Eastern European village” Simon Marnie, ABC Radio

Chasing the Moon brings alive the exuberant and romantic sounds of Gypsy Jazz in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.

There is a fresh flavour to the way different styles are combined, – a mouth-watering mix of hot club and the blues, a dash of folk, lashings of swing, flirting with Latin rhythms and modern elements too. The joy is infectious. The 6 piece ensemble envelopes you in an almost orchestral sound combining vocals, violin, guitar, double bass, sax, piano accordion and drums. The darkly chromatic gypsy sound is counterpointed with the light hearted flair of American swing and the ambience of the Parisian café is there in the accordion of Garry Steel and the inclusion of songs by Piaf as well as instrumentals in the famous French Musette style. Over an extensive career Grant-Lee Phillips has earned a reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter – an artist who can deliver lyrical observations with a dry and evocative sense of time and place.

His gift for reconciling classic touchstones with an adventurous sensibility has distinguished his work since he first emerged as the front-man of the acclaimed trio Grant Lee Buffalo in the early ‘90s. At once cinematic in scope and disarmingly intimate, his captivating solo career has explored a variety of modes. Whether it be the electronic inventiveness of Mobilize, acoustic interplay of Virginia Creeper, chamber-pop of Little Moon, meditative solemnity of Walking in the Green Corn, Nashville inspired The Narrows or his latest and most urgent work, Widdershins – Phillips is not one to rest on the accolades of the past. He’s a riveting live performer who thrives onstage. Nevertheless, a new generation have discovered Phillips through his role as the town troubadour on the cult television hit The Gilmore Girls (both in its original run and the 2016 reunion.)

Lucys’ songwriting weaves together traditional folk and pop influences with a strong focus on storytelling which is evident in the release of her two albums and two EPs in the last eight years. A seasoned performer, she has played to packed venues both overseas and at home.

“A wonderfully natural singer and uncommonly gifted writer. Prediction: within this decade Lucy will be a noted songster, worldwide.” – Doug Spencer, ABC Radio National.

Empire State Elevators’ beautiful folk melodies imbued with jazz harmony prompt soaring improvisations, taking the listener on a curious journey through an inter-dimensional fantasy.

Carl Pannuzzo began writing music for piano and oboe that could be at once melodic and tangential, inviting the expressive voice and improvisational talents of JJessica Foot and subsequently adding kaleidoscopic double bassist Holly Downes (The String Contingent).

Launching their sonically superb debut ‘the rise and fall of…, the Empire State Elevators are redefining the possibilities of ‘uplifting’ music and it’s well worth stepping in for the ride.

LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL: The ultimate vintage hard rock show @ Django
Jun 1 all-day

metak 1a

7pm doors, 9pm show

Classic is a word too often applied to the mediocre. Too easily posted alongside the drab and dreary. It is a phrase too readily conjured for older rock, regardless of its standing.

But It is a dirty word no more.

Long Live Rock and Roll is a show concocted by journeymen of the genre, through decades of blood, sweat and tears on the road. It is more than a tribute to the Gods of rock’n’roll, it is a flashback to a time when the music was simple, but the songs were great.

Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Toto, The Cult, Chuck Berry and Queen are just a few of the great acts to get reborn in this must-watch show. We’ll say no more, and let the music do the talking.

PAUL MCKENNA BAND (Scotland) @ Django
Jun 2 all-day

pk7pm door, 9pm show

“The best folk band to have come out of Scotland in the last twenty years” New York Times

“The best band of their generation” The Living Tradition

“A band with the potential to dominate the Scottish/Irish traditional scene for the next twenty years” Fatea Magazine

Glasgow’s Paul McKenna sees the world as verses and choruses. For over a decade he has travelled the world as a musician, collecting the stories of everyday and exceptional lives. From there come the songs written and sung by a common man with an exceptional voice. His vibrato is immediately recognisable and when he begins to weave a tale, an audience is stilled.

When asked what he wants from the music industry it’s simply – “nothing…I just want to sing songs”. Be it social injustice, inequality or an homage to the wonder and joy of simple things, he sings for us all. His band mates (Ewan Baird, Conor Markey, Robbie Greig, Conal McDonagh) weave exceptional melodies with traditional instrumentation and their sound has carried them all over the world.

Eric Bogle is probably best known for his song ‘The Band Played Waltzing Matilda’, which confirmed its iconic status by appearing as a question in the Australian version of Trivial Pursuit! By popular demand Ed Kuepper revisits his Solo & By Request show this June / July performing material from right across his 50+ albums and a career that began in 1977 with The Saints groundbreaking release (I’m) Stranded.

“In an age when most musicians come and go, Kuepper still stands tall as an icon of the Australian independent music scene. Over his extraordinary career, Kuepper has been a Saint, a Laughing Clown and an Aint among other things. This evening Kuepper proved that he’s a national treasure.”

The Saints, Laughing Clowns and solo Kuepper Klassics it’s all up for grabs. Whisper loudly and Herr Kuepper might even drop in solo versions of those great new Aints! classics.

Everything I’ve Got Belongs To You was played on the proviso that the audience joined in, which resulted in a sublime call-and-response chorus singalong that even seemed to leave the great man speechless for a moment. Kuepper then confirmed, with a wry smile, that he’d “never heard it quite like that before”. This was followed up with the dynamic Electric Storm before Kuepper finished up his set with the first request of this evening: The Way I Made You Feel. – The Music Perth review

BRIAN CAMPEAU: GET BLIND WITH BRIAN, THE SEQUEL! (Sydney Guitar Festival) + BUNGARRIBEE
Aug 12 all-day

Brian_02-edit7pm doors, 8pm show

For the Sydney Guitar Festival, Brian will be arranging music for a unique performance where the audience is to be blindfolded.

After receiving rave reviews from his SOLD OUT SGF 2017 performance, Brian returns for his victory lap with ‘Get Blind with Brian! The Sequel.’
Brian Campeau is mostly known for his complex guitar playing accompanied by long sorrowful vocals. He is much less known for his charm and willingness to please his audience. That’s because some people don’t like his sense of humour, but that’s ok, right?

He’s originally from Canada, but he’s been in Australia since 2003, so that pretty much makes him true blue.
Though he tends not to like being compared to other artists, he does see some value to these comparisons. With this in mind, some would say Brian sounds like Nick Drake mixed with Radiohead. Others might say he sounds like Mary Schneider, but that would be misleading because he sounds nothing like that.

“An amazing performance…some of the most interesting combinations of composed & improvised music that I’ve heard in Australia” (Philip Johnston). Lead by composer, accordionist, pianist Gary Daley, this mesmerising form of chamber music creates fresh improvisations on classical gems. From originals to Debussy to Bartok & Ligeti filtered through worlds as diverse as folk, jazz, balkan & carnatic rhythms. SOLID AIR: THE MUSIC OF NICK DRAKE @ Django
Aug 23 all-day

Project27pm doors, 8pm show

The night features some of Sydney’s best sing songwriters paying tribute to the Nick Drake Catalogue, including Emad Younan, Leroy Lee, Julia Johnson, Matt Tonks, Michael Azzopardi, Matt Ralph, Andy Gordon, Lauren Carlson, Nat James, Chris Neto, Rosie McDonald and Charli Rainford!

During his short lifetime, he was a tortured musical genius. Yet in death, Nick Drake has found an avid cult following.

Before dying from an overdose of anti-depressants at just 26, Drake released a trio of hauntingly beautiful albums: Five Leaves Left (1969), Bryter Layter (1970) and Pink Moon (1972). None sold more than a few thousand copies – and Drake’s reluctance to perform live certainly didn’t help sales during his lifetime.

Yet it was a rare live performance in Cambridge that led to Drake teaming up with producer Joe Boyd – a member of Fairport Convention caught the appearance and told Boyd about it. Boyd, who produced Fairport Convention and The Incredible String Band, was so impressed that he promptly offered the 20-year-old a recording contract in 1968.

Drake’s music – he left behind just three full-length albums and a handful of other songs recorded shortly before his death – has influenced countless other contemporary artists.

Ephemera: a musical exploration of celestial landscapes such as pulsars, craters, planetary atmospheres, stars, sun and void. Merging the sound worlds of jazz and contemporary classical, and set to real space sounds, it is a unique sonic experience. The ensemble is led by Keyna Wilkins (piano/flute/compositions) with Elsen Price (double bass/loop pedal), Will Gilbert (trumpet) and special guest Carl St Jacques (viola) and includes freely improvised pieces. NASA recordings of electromagnetic waves from planets and stars is the backdrop soundtrack and has been complied by astronomer Professor Paul Francis with projections of space probe footage.

Since their first performance three years ago, Elysian Fields, Australia’s only electric viola da gamba band, has carved out a growing reputation for performances that blur the boundaries between jazz, chamber music and world music. Drawing largely on the compositional and arranging skills of its multitalented members, the six-piece band’s charts shift effortlessly from stately, baroque-like solemnity to multilayered improvisations and driving, pulsating rhythms. And then there is the unique sound of the electric viola da gamba!  Led by Jenny Eriksson, the band comprises Matt Mahon (piano), Matt Keegan (saxophones), Siebe Pogson (bass guitar), Susie Bishop (voice/violin) and Finn Ryan (drums).
