On Mother’s Day, we present a celebration of women in jazz featuring international trombone star Shannon Barnett and local youth talent, the Young Women’s Jazz Orchestra (YWJO).
YWJO is made up of talented young women aged 16 to 22, and is Sirens Big Band’s youth development program, directed by trumpeter and composer Ellen Kirkwood. Playing fresh and exciting repertoire with a focus on Australian composers, this energetic 17 piece group will be presenting 2 colourful sets including swing, ska, Afro-Cuban and contemporary jazz.
YWJO’s extra special guest tonight will be trombonist/composer extraordinaire Shannon Barnett. She has played with such international jazz luminaries as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Paquito d’Rivera, Darcy James Argue, and Jon Faddis, and has been a member of the WDR Big Band (GER) and Birdland Big Band (NYC) amongst many others. She was 2007 Young Australian Jazz Artist of the year, and her albums “Country” and “Hype” have received nominations for prestigious AIR, Bell and Limelight awards. Shannon is a Melbourne ex-pat currently living in Cologne, Germany and YWJO is ecstatic for this opportunity to play with her.
