Yacht rock was the music of the late 1970s and early 1980s that was the polar opposite of punk: think gentle singer-songwriter melodies, backed by session musicians playing some slowed-down disco funk. It’s music that, let’s face it, was completely daggy, but which you completely love anyway: think the likes of Michael McDonald, Toto, Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, Boz Scaggs and the Captain & Tennille.

The Smooth Sailing Yacht Rock Party features an crack 13-piece band, complete with horns and backing vocalists, featuring musicians who’ve played with the likes of Josh Pyke, Lazy Susan, The Lee & Nancy Experience, and Suzy & The Snakepit. THE MOST FAMOUS BAND YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF: A TRIBUTE TO BIJELO DUGME @ Django

Session 2: 8:30pm – 10:30pm | Show 9:00pm (60-70 min)

More past members than Black Sabbath? A reunion show that sold more tickets than Led Zeppelin’s? Outranking Tina Turner, Paul McCartney and Frank Sinatra on the highest-ever-attended concerts list? Who are this band, and why have you never heard of them?

Its 1974, and a group of young punks dodging in and out from behind the iron curtain, play their way out from their base in Sarajevo. Producing their own debut album, they created not only music, but an entire genre that would grow around them. Political pressures forced their breakup on the eve of the war, but their reunion in 2005 saw them sell 220 000 tickets to a single show.

More than just a band, Bijelo Dugme – White Buttons – were a phenomenon rarely seen. Combining the coolest rock’n’roll of the 70’s with traditional folk music is not a task often attempted, and seldom mastered. Bijelo Dugme conquered it in a way nobody ever had, or ever will again. Beyond the glitter jackets, bellbottoms and outrageous moustaches, was music that has stood the test of time.

Tickets are limited to this surefire sellout show, so be quick to get yours!

With a sound steeped in Jazz, R&B and Soul, multiple ARIA award nominee and APRA award winner Jade MacRae returns to Australia in 2021 set to deliver her acclaimed album “Handle Me With Care” live, supported by her incredible band.

Touted by The Guardian as; “the perfect comeback vehicle, with a subtle 60s-leaning”, Jade’s latest offering pays homage to classic R&B and Soul and deals a full hand of love and survival, opening the door to a new chapter for the much loved Sydney songstress.

Having spent much of the past 4 years on the road with US blues guitar juggernaut Joe Bonamassa, Jade relishes the opportunity to reconnect with home and showcase this album in full for the very first time since it’s release in 2020. Bonamassa heralds Jade as; “one of the most naturally gifted musicians I have ever encountered. Jade is what you would call a singer’s singer and musician’s musician. It is rare to see the combination of soulfulness and technical dexterity meet in such a great way.”

“MacRae doesn’t do things by halves. Having penned a batch of songs buried deep in the R&B tradition, she assembled the absolute A-team of Sydney musicians to help her bring them to life.”

Session 2: 8:30pm – 10:30pm | Show 9:00pm (60-70 min)

Bob Evans, the ARIA winning alter ego of Jebediah frontman Kevin Mitchell, has graced the Australian music scene for more than two decades and has written some of the country’s most beloved songs.

Under the alias of Bob Evans, Mitchell has released five studio albums, all of which showcase the versatility and skill of this talented songsmith. Gentle, acoustic melodies prevail, enveloping the classic folk storytelling and strong emotional pull that characterises Mitchells’ substantial body of work.

The ‘Tomorrowland’ national tour is in celebration of Bob Evans’ sixth studio album of the same name. Tomorrowland was spawned during one of the worst times for anyone, anywhere: the covid-cursed 2020, a period when initial recording was completed one day after all his gigs were cancelled, and two weeks before Kevin and everyone else in Victoria went into an agonisingly long lockdown. But the result is euphoric, sparkling – a luminescent rock record from an unstoppable songsmith.

Bukhu’s music brings a contemporary take on the tradition of Mongolian bards of the middle ages and those of ancient times, acting as a national memory bank by working mythologies, historic figures and events into traditional verse form.

THE VAMPIRES MEET CHRIS ABRAHAMS
Jun 24 all-day

6pm doors | 6:30pm show

The Vampires are excited to be back in oz after a forced hiatus in 2020, with band members split across the world. With their return they bring a new collaboration with renowned pianist Chris Abrahams. No stranger to Camelot audiences, Chris is one-third of the great Australian group, ‘The Necks’. Arguably one of our most influential pianists Chris makes a great match for The Vampires, who recently have taken an expansive approach to their compositions. Not to be missed.

The Vampires have released six albums and toured relentlessly around Australia and Europe. With a distinctive sound that is undoubtedly their own, the band has garnered praise from US Downbeat (“phenomenal”), Guardian UK (“seductive genre hopping creativity”), and All About Jazz (“gold all over”). The Vampires have received nominations for Australia’s ARIA awards, Bell Awards, AIR Awards, and were the first instrumental act to be short-listed for the Australian Music Prize.

“In a head-bopping nod to the obvious, The Vampires play vamps. Yet, these are no ordinary vamps. Written and improvised melodies are beautiful and flawless, and the harmonies between the three voices (woodwinds, brass, bass) ring with pitch-perfect sonority. There is a sublime pacing to each of the tunes here, with strategic shifts in texture, tonality, tonality, rhythm or intensity twisting the narrative of each hypnotic groove into an ever-unfolding and irresistible arc.”

Miriam’s albums are soulful collections of stories, beautifully told through strings – kora ( West African harp) soaring violin arrangements, guitar, lush vocal harmonies and Lieberman’s unmistakable voice. With a world wise flavour the music has a catchiness and contemporary tone that is entirely it’s own.

Albums will be available on the night.

BENEFIT NIGHT FOR VLAD KHUSID
Jul 4 all-day

6pm doors, 6:30pm show

Vladimir Khusid is one of Sydney’s most loved musicians – and for more than 20 years his incredible trumpet playing has been an integral part of Marsala and Monsieur Camembert. He is a legendary figure and indeed an absolute institution in the world music/Russian/Jewish/Gypsy music scenes. He has also inspired generations of Sydney finest musicians as their teacher at Sydney Grammar, even touring the school’s big band to Monterey Jazz Festival!

We are all incredibly saddened and distressed to learn that Vlad has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. Suffice to say, the prognosis is extremely bleak. We need to do everything we can to help Vlad and his family during this profoundly difficult time.

So on Sun 4th July, we will all be getting together at Camelot to celebrate his incredible life and career, and raising as much funds as we possible can.

Members of Marsala and Monsieur Camembert will be playing along with all sorts of other wonderful musicians – so beyond the incredible gravity of the occasion, it will be a most uplifting evening of music.

We look forward to your support of this very special night.

SERAFINA: Bossa Nova and Beyond @ Django
Jul 4 all-day

6pm doors, 6:30pm show

Anna Salleh first fell in love with bossa nova as a child, and deepened her understanding of Brazilian music by packing up her guitar and heading to Rio de Janeiro. She has performed internationally and is known for her collaborations with some of Australia’s best world/jazz musicians e.g. in the Afro Latin Moods Quartet (with guitarist Guy Strazz) and the five-piece Gorgeous Songs from Brazil & Beyond, with which she produced two albums.

Here Anna (voice/guitar) joins forces with Gino Pengue (guitar), Loretta Palmeiro (clarinet, saxophone, flute) and Jess Ciampa (percussion) in a new quartet called SERAFINA, which pays homage to bossa nova and samba classics from Antonio Carlos Jobim to Baden Powell, as well as intricate choro and other styles, including original compositions, drawing on Brazilian and other Latin genres.

Dave’s gift for melody and lyric imagery are the toast of his generation, and the envy of contemporary artists. His songs are as vital as the day they were written and his voice richer and more keening for the benefit of the passing years.

Session 2: 8:30pm – 10:30pm | Show 9:00pm (60-70 min)

Renowned acoustic guitar slinger Lloyd Spiegel is delighted to announce his return to Camelot Lounge!

Of course, like everyone else, Spiegel has been in virtual hibernation for the last year or so and is keen to hit the bandstand with a renewed energy, fire in his belly, and fronting his new trio.

Featuring trombonist extraordinaire Lisa Baird and long-time collaborator Tim Burnham on drums, the trio allows Spiegel a little bit of extra scope to bring the flavours of his albums to life in concert. The grooves are deeper, New Orleans is in the house, and the joint will be rocking. Since it seems we’re all allowed to dance now, we should take every opportunity to do so.

Lloyd will be playing tracks from 2019’s multiple award-winning album Cut and Run, along with back catalogue and blues classics.
